Has anyone worked/tried XJMAIL as an alternative email program on the psion netbook?

Julie asked me to answer to your question... (she is very probably a nice person - physically not only cybernetically... I mean)

I don't own a Netbook (I wish I had the money to buy it... sigh :( )
but according to Keita website it is compatible with Netbook and basically with all er5 machines including the er3 Geofox and 5 classic (It does not mention Osaris).

I run it on my 5mx and it works great.
However since its main target was the Japanese audience prior the software installation you must install in the following order:

Japanese language plug-in
A text editor different from the built-in (free choice)
XJMail package
and finally the attachment plug-in (link available in Keita'web page)

The setting is somehow explained in the .eng files of the package

Did I help? Well... I hope so...

Interesting links, Zolee, but I just can't see the relevance to XJMail, the subject of this thread. Can you enlighten us please?

have anybody already tried them? also, have anybody tried XJMail - does it supports filters (rules)?

Hi all, I'm quite new to this forum but I think
I can answer this one.

> also, have anybody tried XJMail
> - does it supports filters (rules)?

It supports filters based on the mail size.
Anything more complicated (like the filtering
based on the headers) is not supported.

1. If you'd like, you can set the threshold
size in kilobytes.

2. You can tell XJMail the prefered behavior
for any email larger than the threshold, i.e.
2-1: Ignore (do nothing)
2-2: Peek (download only a part of it)

3. If you prefer to peek into large emails,
you can (and have to) pre-define how
many lines you want to download.

For example, if I set the threshold value
to 10kB, select the "peek" option, and set the
"lines to peek" value to 10, any email larger
than 10kB is only partly downloaded, meaning
only the header plus the first 10 lines of the
body are downloaded, and the email itself is
left on the server.
Anything smaller than 10kB is downloaded
(and deleted from or left on the server accoding
to your settings).

The actual behavior of XJMail is a bit more
complicated because of the interactions
between different settings, but this is more
or less it.

Hope this helps.

Excuse my ignorance (and I have checked the website and still none the wiser) but what does xjmail do that Psion's standard mail software doesn't? Does it provide support for different types of mail servers? Does it offer html mail viewing / creation?

I was just thinking the same thing. What are we missing with our regular email facilities???? If there is, please let us know.

Thanks,

Well, my email provider requires my to use SMTP authentication which the standard email application does not supply and XJMail does. Another lack of the standard email application is that is does not support auto sending and receiving when opening(only sending) and XjMail does. These are the features where I use Xjmail for..
I hopes this answer you question somewhat.

Hi wanman and bobbyr, if you've actually read my web page and didn't find any useful information, sorry for that. I hope pliskens' post plus mine somewhat help you.
(And pliskens, thank you for your nice explanations.)

From the users' viewpoint, the main differences are probably the way you receive/send emails, and the authentication mechanisms, both of which pliskens has pointed out.

1. The way you receive/send.
For example you can do the following procedures in one go using XJMail:
"connect to the POP server, choose which email to download using the predefined rules (see my previous post), download, connect to the SMTP server to send emails, then automatically disconnect from the net".
You can tweak the behavior of course.
In general these features helps to reduce your connection time (and GSM fee) which makes sense to me.
Of course if you prefer you can do everything manually just in the same way as in the standard email app, but even in that case you have a greater flexibility (like downloading only a part of an email).

2. Authentication
SMTP authentication, which is in some ISPs mandatory for sending emails, is supported by XJMail.
APOP authentication for receiving emails is also supported.

There are more, but these seem to be the major features the users find useful.

To be fair, what is offered by the standard email app and is not available in XJMail is iso-8859 (latin) support when sending emails, as XJMail was designed to handle iso-2022-jp character set (Japanese). You can use only ASCII characters (in addition to Japanese characters) when sending emails. You cannot use accented characters and such.

Keita

Thanks Keita/Pliskens,

I now understand the purpose and usefulness of the app.

When considering alternative email clients, don't forget that many ISPs offer web based mail accessed from anywhere via a web page. I use this on Opera and it works very well - albeit a bit slower.

Is XJmail straight forward to install? Is the program in English or in Japanese? If there is more to it than a SIS file, can someone post the steps required for a successful instalation and setup?

xjmail is a lifesaver if you need authenticated sending, but it's complicated. If you PM me your email, I can send you the files, but it takes a lot of googling and time to get xjmail working.
