I work on a machine that provides serial port access only through a replicator port. I installed PsiWin before receiving the replicator, so it could not connect to the Psion at that time. Now that the replicator is installed the connection works, but a backup (announced bu time 12 minutes) takes appr. 5 hours!

I got an advice to reinstall PsiWin with the Psion connected, but the uninstaller claimes PsiWin.isu is damaged and fails to continue. When manually uninstalling the program the icons.dll and some other files are impossible to delete. A reinstall of PsiWin of course does not work before the old one has been removed.

Is there any way to either repair PsiWin.isu or to manually get rid of the dll-files in the PsiWin directory. Is there any previous experience with long backup times? For your information: My computer is a Ancer Travelmate 634, which unfortunately does not have its own RS232.

First make sure that PsiWin is not running by removing its shortcut from the Start Up folder and rebooting. In Windows XP this will probably be in:

C:\Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\

then manually delete all the files in the path:

C:\Program Files\Psion\PsiWin\

and, finally, run the attached PsiWin Registry Cleaner before reinstalling 2.3.3

It worked, although I could not remove all files immediately. In fact I had to reboot the machine three times before I had PsiWin cleaned up.

The bad news is that reinstalling PsiWin the right way did not solve the backup problem. It still tries backing up for a very long time without getting anything done. Could the fault be with the replicator (strange, though, since all other traffic through COM1 goes smoothly)?

Thanks anyway a lot for your right-to-the-point advice -- you are great!!!

Hans,

It sounds like there's a file on your Psion that's not closing properly for backup. PsiWin can be bad about this and just hang. If you press CTRL-ALT-DELETE, I suspect that XP will show PsiWin is not responding. I'd suggest using JB5StopGo and running it before you backup. It will go through each running process and either close it or give you the chance to kill it if it's not responding to a normal close request. Running it after a backup then reopens everything to the state you were in before you started the backup. I'm attachng a copy of it. Give it a try and see if that solves the problem
