MissingWasp 09-24-2002, 01:49 PM wot r the updates in palm 5.0 as apposed to 4.1 as i am just about to buy sony clie t665c is it worht upgrading it to 5.0? can u upgrade if so where from........ thx guys PDASROCK 09-27-2002, 12:44 AM Well, os 5.0 is supposed to be a larger, faster, more internet capable os. Somwhat akin to ppc, but still as intuative and expandable as 4.1, etc. You cannot upgrade. Os 5.0 uses an entirly different processor(strong-arm, 175mhz or so, by ti, vs dragonball, by motorola). Most apps will run on both(about 4/5) but 5.0 will still be quite...different. Kayvon 09-28-2002, 12:55 AM I heard it rumored that Palm scratched the 5.0 OS project. I don't remember the source, but they've purportedly decided to stick with what they've got for now. TheSpies 09-28-2002, 01:46 AM I heard it rumored that Palm scratched the 5.0 OS project um, well thats not the case. 5.0 was finished and released to manufacturers some time ago. Both Palm and Sony will be releasing OS5 devices next month. take a look at http://palminfocenter.com for more. jwnorris 10-04-2002, 05:10 PM Originally posted by TheSpies um, well thats not the case. 5.0 was finished and released to manufacturers some time ago. Both Palm and Sony will be releasing OS5 devices next month. take a look at http://palminfocenter.com for more. Well, since it's out and Sony has announced two devices that run OS5, is there any chance that Sony's devices that run OS4 [as my NR70V does] will be able to upgrade to OS5? J W  TheSpies 10-04-2002, 05:39 PM sorry, but no. OS 5 is designed to run on an ARM processor. PDASROCK 10-04-2002, 09:39 PM Not to put thespies answer down, but in a little more detail, instead of using a dragonball processor, like every palm so far, the os 5 pdas will use various "arm" processors, strongarm, ti, etc. which means they will have to have a totally different system. However, they wil still be able to run 4/5 os 4.1, 3.5 etc. programs, and probably about 2x as fast, but they will use an emulator to do so. TheSpies 10-05-2002, 12:34 AM I guess i was a little brief on that answer :D MoscowHippy 10-28-2002, 07:49 PM Any one know how to get OS5 working on an iPAQ. I dabbled on the dark side (work related) and came back to ol' reliable, my trusty Prism. I would like to make my expensive new paper weight (iPAQ) useful again not saying that it ever was... PDASROCK 10-28-2002, 09:19 PM Well, here's the deal. Because of processor and copyright issues, there is no way to get any palm os onto pocket pc pdas(well, you can get the data transfered, but you can't run it). However, rumor has it that there is a ppc emulator in production which would let you run palm stuff on ppc. This project was started some time ago, but stopped due to copyright stuff, however, I think they got it started up again. It would be great to have something like that, but then again, if they did get something like that, palm wouldn't be able to sell nearly as many units. We'll see. Cheers MoscowHippy 10-28-2002, 09:32 PM That is truly sad but you know there are Linux ports available for the paper weights.... I was hoping to do better! PalmOS rules PDASROCK 10-28-2002, 10:30 PM Heh, I'll trade you my beautiful IIIc for your paperweight! little-man 11-01-2002, 09:03 AM why is it that most hacks won't run on OS 5.0? is it that they that they patch system files that don't exist anymore? I heard a rumor that Tealmaster 2.00 will run hacks on 5.0, but I'm skeptical. anyone know anything about this? TheSpies 11-01-2002, 04:49 PM tealmaster will run hacks on 5.0 as they added 5.0 support to it. however not all hacks will work. the link explains: http://www.tealpoint.com/helpmstr.htm#_128_ mcaplan5 11-02-2002, 09:17 AM I read that OS 6 is already in the works! "Handheld Computing Magazine..... little-man 11-02-2002, 09:54 AM Wow. sony must have something to do with it. they need to keep up their reputation for coming out with a new handheld every two months. mhamann 11-05-2002, 04:46 PM OS 6 has been in the works for a few months now I think. It'll be late summer next year before it's released though I think. fjohnsen 11-05-2002, 09:40 PM The disappointing part of my encounter with OS 5 was that Xmaster or Hackmaster don't work. Architectural change, ok, but I want my most useful Palm utility to work; FindHack. Anyone knowing whether there is a good search tool for OS 5, or if old hacks can be run in any way? little-man 11-05-2002, 10:24 PM yup, Tealpoint claims that it's Tealmaster hack manager can handle most hacks on OS 5.0. Get it at www.tealpoint.com tomacito 12-04-2002, 12:14 AM strangely enough, Sony tech support said that the t-665 is upgradeable to OS 5. something about the 4mb ROM. but I have spoken to 2 techs and gotten the same answer... it's upgradeable. (or are their techs clueless ?? So... where can we get it??? toma@redcar.com TheSpies 12-04-2002, 02:40 AM thier techs must be clueless. OS 5 runs on an ARM processor. only three machines on the market at this time can run it: the Clie NX60 & NX70 and the Tungsten T PDASROCK 12-04-2002, 09:49 PM Yeah, That's what I'm thinking to. While it is possible(and I almost feel likely) that palm will release an updated system for all dragonball pdas, os 5 runs on arm, so it can't run on anything but the nx series and tungsten. It may be that they will make a special version. Hmm, I hope so. PDA Street
