Is the SD card much faster for file transfers, running apps from the card, or both? Have a MMC card and it takes forever to transfer large maps to my PALM and trying to view a map on the card is painfully slow.

It is slow mostly because the data bus on the Palm is so slow. SD cards are at least 4x faster than MMC. I heard that you might notice a speed difference on a Palm, SD vs MMC, but definitely not 4x.
You can try PiDirectII. It works with other apps so that only the portion of a map that is necessary is loaded from the card. I have used a 5MB Mapopolis map while having only 1.4MB RAM available. Normally, Mapopolis would try to load all 5MB onto RAM - and that takes a long time.
