It's very late at night as I type this and so it may sound obvious to any readers of this post but I'm still trying to get my head round the following.

Is there any reason why a back up file cannot be saved as an attachment on a web mail service (e.g. Hotmail) and be transferred back to the Psion as required without using PsiWin? For instance could you attach the contacts data file to an e-mail and send it to a webmail address and download it back into the correct system folder just in case your Psion lets you down in the future (or in the case of Revo's/Mako's a hard reset was needed!)?

If this is possible it also opens up a good resource for storing regular files if one is travelling. It means you can "call in" files as and when you need them rather than cluttering up your C drive.

Hi Calbrit,

Yep this is possible. If possible get your hands on RMRZip or the like to enable you to compress the file as much as possible. Contacts.cdb can be compressed as much as 70% !! You can then attach and email it to your hotmail account (or your own pop3 mail account) and then download it as required.

The reason I say use a pop3 account if possible is that accessing Hotmail using Opera (the only way as Web cannot access Hotmail) is a bit of an arduous task. As the email app does not automatically download your email (as per outlook express) when you dial in. You can leave emails in your account and download them as required.

If I am travelling on business and have very important file I keep it in my pop3 account aswell. If my Psion goes bang then I can still get to it via webmail as my ISP (Tiscali.co.uk) allows both POP3 dial in and webmail access.

Hope this helps

Thanks Si - I have RMRZip so I'll give it a try. I was also thinking that you could attach back up files from a PC back up using the PC e-mail connection - saves struggling with Opera and the Psion for this part of the operation.

I don't know if it can help.
There are two alternative ways of handling these two webmail accounts and they are called Pop3hot and Izymail (http://www.pop3hot.com)
You can retrieve your Hotmail and Yahoo emails as if pop or imap accounts.
Basically what you need is to install one of the two programs in your PC and a network card.
Why the network card?
Because in your Psion email clie,t you'll need to set the PC internat IP network address (192.168.0.1 for example) in the pop and smtp settings.
Which program to choose between the two?
Pop3hot works as a web-to-pop plug-in while Izymail works as web-to-imap. Certainly with Pop3hot there is the option to leave your email in the server but I suppose that for a manager work Izymail can be an excellent choice since you can set several accounts (enterprise imap accounts too...)

No need to go down too complicated a route. If you have are with an ISP such as Tiscali, FreeUK, Blueyonder, Orange or the like, they allow both pop3 access and webmail access which are ideal.
