Ladies and Gentlemen,

As most of you I'm awaiting my iQUE. Although I'm already a PDA converted (I currently have a m505 and can't live without it) I never owned or worked with a GPS. I bought this unit because I travel extensively for work in Europe, and I'm tired of getting lost...

I need to understand this "unlock code" thing... I bought the MapSource European Metro Guide V5 (since I ordered my IQUE here in the US, so it'll come with US maps) and already installed it on my laptop (all of 2 Gb of it!!!). Everything seems to work, and all maps are available and working to store detail (at least the ones registered). I expected to get a prompt asking for unlock code when I installed the software and maps, but this never happened. furthermore, there's also this thing about unlock certificates, coupons etc., so I expected to get a coupon with a code in the Cd package to either activate the CD or go into Garmin's site to get an unlock code, but I've not seen anything like that...

Now, to confuse me furthermore, I went on Garmin's site and I could only find stuff about 100$ charge for unlock code etc.

Can someone make things clear to me???

Thanks!

I don't believe MetroGuide maps need the unlock code. You will get (and need) one for the CitySelect maps that come with the iQue.

The unlock codes are necessary because Mapsource won't download to your GPS unless the GPS serial number has been 'registered' as having been unlocked for that map (a single region, several regions, or all regions). Some map products don't need an unlock code (eg, the topo maps and the MetroGuide maps), but others like the CitySelect, CityNavigator and BlueCharts do. Garmin allows you to unlock two GPS units to a region you have purchased the unlock certificate for, so you could have a hiking unit and a driving unit with the same maps.

There is a menu item in Mapsource where you can enter the unlock codes (Tools - Unlock Codes). You have to visit Garmin's website and enter your certificate number(s) and the mapset / region (or all regions) you are unlocking, and it will give you a code for Mapsource. After you have entered it into Mapsource you can export that info as a file, making it easier to re-setup if you move to a new computer, etc.

After consulting Garmin's website, I started having doubt that the MapSource MetroGuide Europe could work with the iQUE for auto-routing.

I sent a mail to Garmin and they replied that I actually need to get the CitySelect Europe to do that...
