My computer and Palm M130 cannot seem to connect.
I followed install instructions but Palm does not turn on AT ALL! I tried connecting to both two front COM ports, and the two at the rear of the CPU = all with the same result - nothing!

How do I know if I've connected the cable to the correct COM port?

I did try a suggestion by one of the forum users about going to the Control Panel and "Installing New Hardware", etc...but got the error message "This device cannot start (Code 10)".

Any suggestions???

Thanks

First thing to do is press the reset button, and see if this helps.

If not, uninstall and reinstall the Desktop software.

You need to know which port is COM1 and COM2. You might also have to check the BIOS on the PC, in case the COM ports are turned off. This is common in new computers because they are so "obsolete".

Thanks to everyone who replied both privately and on the board to my plea for help to get my new M130 and computer to communicate.

the problem was....I had tried the reset button earlier and it had gotten stuck!!!
So...once unstuck things worked and now I am able to use my new "toy".

Thanks again!!

I'm having the same problem and I have checked everything that Palm support told me to check. I keep getting the message"Unable to initiate hotsync operation because the port is in use by another application"...uhhh, no it's not. I have changed ports and unplugged everything but the pda and still no luck. Any ideas??

If it is a relatively new computer, the COM port may be turned off. Go to the BIOS screen to check. Windows will say it is there, but is unable to verify that it is on.

It could also be a COM/IRQ conflict. Check what IRQ your modem is using and compare with the IRQ your COM ports are using.

Palm Support has more info:

if that doesn't work go to:

and look up FAQ's.

Thanks for responding. I am using a USB port but in the setup on the palm130 when I tap on "local" nothing happens. It should be giving me a choice of USB or Serial, correct? All I get is custom and then it tries to connect to the desk top and then is unable to do so. I can't think what else to do.

So I went back into setup and changed the transfer speed. Then I unplugged the USB and replugged it in and Voila' it worked. I did so many different things that I will probably never be able to repeat my steps....but, for now it works!!:D
