Back in the day of old forum posts, it was widely stated to buy an extended plan for your clie due to the push to market so here they come to trade them in woo hoo.
Actually this post is just to post about the advancements which may just be old news, but still very exciting from the sound of it.
Palm Os 5.0
Arm 200MHz CPU
Camara
- jumps up to 640*480 with option to save as jpg on mem stick
- this would mean capture video will be improved
Voice Recorder
BackSlot for Wireless Conectivity
Keyboard size Improved
Graphite Grey Unit Availability [I like the silver of the nr70 still]
From what i gathrered those who have seen them did not see the black Shadowing on top of screen found on the Nr70[v]. Also The unit seems to come with a Sony Clie Launcher. It looks to be similiar to other launchers but can not tell much from pictures.
I am curious how the code emulation will work to process all the programs made for the current cpus, but with time the better programs will be converted so that will be wonderful.
Well correct the info, share some info, but lets just start some conversation about this new machine. Of course another one will be right around the corner, yet for the meantime lets talk about the NX

I just pre-ordered one, and in poking around the website noticed the following:
You can only order one in Silver. I would have liked the "gun-metal gray", but in talking with their Customer Support people, they say there is NO gray version ... only silver. Wait and see if they come out with a gray one, but I can't wait any longer (see my follow up to the "Frustrated" post).
Also, the "communications slot", is identified as a CF Type II in the specifications. This is also known as CompactFlash! There are CF cards out there that will allow you to store 512 meg and 1 gig of data! I wonder if there will be an ability to utilize these types of memory cards ... wouldn't THAT be cool! That would make the video capabilities actually useful, and more than just "cool-factor". Or how about having 400 MP3 songs available to listen to on a whim?
Regarding availability, the support person I talked to wouldn't say specifically when they would be released, but when pressed, she admitted that they usually go out the door anywhere from a matter of days to a month. This means that we should start seeing them on the shelves around the beginning of November.
I can't wait to get it in my hot little hands ...
:D

Hi
Scientist just re-registered after a long abscence.
Checking the small print on the NX-70V..... it says the compact flash slot is compatible with ONLY the Sony wireless LAN card. Like you, I was drooling over the prospect of a 1Gb Clie. Imagine how many Cybershot pics I could take on holiday without filling memory sticks! Question is, how can they make such restrictions?
If they're software based, roll on the hacks!

I got to play with the NX70V last week for a while and here are my observations:
Still has 16 MB RAM. Not a big deal, as the Palm OS needs very little RAM to run and the apps need even less. The OS was very responsive, unlike the sluggish and bloated PocketPC machines I have looked at lately.
The CF slot on the NX70V will definitely not house CF media. It is designed for the Wi-Fi module only at this time. CLIE Mail is the app for mail, obviously, and the Wi-Fi set up was accomplished in "prefs" then "network". Very easy. Great range and signal strength at 50 feet from access point.
The NX is capable of recording video in MPEG-4 format and of playback of MPEG-1 or MPEG-4. It is nice to have the video feature added. Additionally, the stills have been beefed up to 640 x 480 resolution (VGA) and the camera is over 300,000 pixels now (compared to 100,000 before). I watched a Simpsons episode off of Memory Stick and it was very passable. The 200 MHz processor definitely helps the framerates and the MPEG-4 compression was great.
The voice recording can be enabled by the capture button on the side of the unit where the stills are taken. The voice files can be added as attachments to email or used as alarms within the world alarm clock.
The universal remote feature (DVD, receiver, VCR, TV) is still there, as the unit has double infrared ports. The data port still is 3-5 feet but the entertainment one can hit 15-18 feet. CLIE RMC is still the app.
Also, there are "themes" with the Palm OS 5 on this unit. You can select the new look, classic look, or a new (and much cooler) Sony theme that runs very intuitively from the Jog Dial on the side.
Estimated battery life is still 10 days. If you flip the "hold" button on the side, you will disable the screen and buttons and get upwards of 10-11 hours of music playback.
There will also be a NX60 at $499 sans camera.
Overall, the response was snappy and it was an absolute pleasure using the Sony theme and doing video and voice. Once I get my student loan paid down a bit, I'll snag one.

I ran across an article (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/pcworld/20021002/tc_pcworld/105569) that indicates (at the end) that the NX70 would be released very soon in Japan, soon to be followed by the US.
I can't wait to get my hands on it ... :)

It's nice to live in Japan. I bought an PEG NX 70V on Saturday. After a dark one year use of the T400, I just love the bright display and allmost everything else.
One thing I miss though are the hacks. My OS is japanese but I use german and english software as well. With the German one could change the fonts and it worked just fine. With the NX70V everything is in high resolution and the fonts can not be changed.
But I suspect that before long there will be hacks to make OS 5 do what we want. Some DA applications have allready been chanched.
So be patient, it's worth while to wait.

Max. Could you please post any information regarding the device that you may have noticed so those of us in the states can get ready for when they get here... How is load time on apps, what apps are working in OS5 and what is not? things like that..

Well, I'm still checking around. But so far, X-Master is not running and with it all the hacks I used, like Font Hacks123 and MiddleCapsHack etc. Also I used DA Launcher by Hacker Dude-san. He just came out with a new version that runs under OS5. There are quite a number of DA applications that are upgraded but with others I'm still waiting. The ones I used most where DAs to look up chinese charakters in japanese texts. Another useful tool I had to give up was Newpen which lets you write outside the Graphity section.
But since I use most of the time the regular programs anyway it is no big deal.
Loading time is of course faster, but if I compare it with my old device, again it's not that much of a difference. Loading programs from the memorystick is quite easier. With the Clie Launcher one can select them easier and loading is faster too.
I do not play too many games, but when I tried snowballer.......forget it, it's so fast you can't hit anything.
But for playing chess, the speed helps of course.
I have not yet bought the wireless lan card, because I'm not sure yet, how easy I would get access outside my home to the internet.
Tried to record some music. The sound is great, but I'll have to invest a lot of money to get enough memorysticks 32mb was not enough for a whole CD.

First off I don't know anything about the type of wireless the NX70V uses or what it can do so if my idea is totally way off please relieve me of my ignorance.
But wouldn't it be cool to use the wireless card to network different clies to gether and use the video camera and the voice recorder to make some sort of video/audio chat. You know, like those internet conference things. Would it actually be possible with the right software?

Seems like the CF Slot WILL accept other mfr storage cards too, if somebody writes the driver that is. :)

Jap vs International model
Read a review from SPUG that says:
"Non-Japanese computer users, once again, please save yourself the trouble and do not buy Japanese version of the CLIE. Bite your teeth and wait for a couple of months and buy the English version. The CD will NOT run on non-Japanese font capable computers."

I just spoke to Sony tech support to get further info before purchase, and they said that Sony will be offering a 512 gig memory stick by year-end.

512 GIGABYTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure you meant 512 MB.
Was there any mention on pricing?:o

I noticed my typo after it went out, it's MB, not GB.
I was talking to tech support, they had no pricing. I was actually surprised they even discussed unannounced product.

And now the great question: With high res screens, 512 gigabyte mem sticks(:D thanks oak), superfast streamlined pdas, does the pda sync to the computer, or is the computer that syncs to the pda? Cheers

I love my new NX. The only beef I have is that OS5 = no hacks. I went to get a new version of Xmaster(when I loaded the one I used with my NR-I had an error message) and their website says that OS5 doesn't support hacks....:( I'll surely miss mine if that is true. Anyone know differently?

Well, tealmaster from tealpoint software www.tealpoint.com is supposed to be able to use hacks woth os 5.0 and if I had an os 5.0 pda, I would be telling you right now wether that's true or not. :D
