What does everyone think of this? The size added onto the clie, the price of the units themselves($150???!!!), the fact that it only takes 802.11, the fact that sony is sole supplier?

everything is getting thinner thesedays...sony is challenging the market if they can compete those nx70v's with other 1/3 slimmer pda's...but what the heck! i am addicted to sony...i'll be getting one soon!!

From what I've read, the only reason it only accepts their wireless card is a lack of drivers.

You can bet it won't take long for drivers to show up. As for me, I ordered one with the unit. I don't mind the extra size ... it looks like it will still fit in my pocket just fine, and the price wasn't too far out of line.

If drivers for CF storage cards become available, that will be a bonus. :)

The price is a little high since you can get most CF 802.11b cards for around a $100 or less. Some of the ones that use the lowest power consumption are up around $125. I haven't found any power consumption specs for the Sony card; has anyone else?
I'm sure that not long after the NX series comes out you will see some of the other manufacturers creating Sony drivers for their cards. But I can't wait till then so I will probably be ordering the Sony wireless CF card. ;)

It really would make much more sense if it was only a driver issue. I don't suppose it's to much to ask for a cf 2 driver, or is it more complicated than that?

On the SonyStyle website it says that the PEGA-WL100 Wireless LAN card is a CF Type I.
The only difference between CF Type I and CF Type II cards is the card thickness. A CF Type I card will operate in a CF Type I or CF Type II slot. A CF Type II card will only fit in a CF Type II slot. The electrical interfaces are identical. CF Type II cards are thicker than CF Type I cards. I think that is why most higher capacity CF cards are type II.
I haven't seen if the NX70 series will actually support a CF Type II size card.
So basically you have two issues for compatibility. The CF slot type and having the appropriate driver for the CF card for the OS used in the handheld.

If you have access to a wireless 802.11 of course! I have a Linksys wireless network in my home and want to see how it works as a browser. I tried a Tosiba (E740.. Whatever the high end is there!) and hated its 802.11 implementation. Graphics were terrible and "Windows 2002 for Handhelds" It (Windows for Handhelds) is bloated and more. They have their "fans" but I can't see the attraction. I will try the 802.11 from Sony when its in stock at a local best buy ect.. and can have an easy return it I do not like it.

I read in one of the forums somewhere that the PEGA-WL100 wireless LAN card has the Intel chip and is the same as the Socket CF 802.11b card. The Socket card has one of the lowest power usage of all the CF 802.11b card I have seen. I believe in sleep mode it uses <20ma, and awake it uses <170ma. This is obviously good for battery life for handheld devices. I have seen prices for the Socket CF card range from $129 to $189 so the Sony price for their CF card is in line with prices for similar cards.
You can get cheaper CF wireless LAN cards, though none yet are supported in the NX series, but their power usage ratings can be up to twice as much which will deplete your handheld battery even that much quicker.
BTW....Sony has the CF card on backorder but I just ordered one from Best Buy. They had it in stock and it is on it's way. Now I just have to wait for DELL to ship the NX70V!

It's probably a very good thing the card doesn't use much power, I hear the new nx series is as power hungry as pocket pc.

I have studied the market for months now.. I ended up with a TOshiba E740. I was so close to getting the Sony, because I used Palm for you years and years. What made me change my mind:

1. My Toshiba was 400 Dollars, with Built in Wi-Fi, two memory slots CF and SD. and it is so thin you wont believe it.
Sony to raise to this level... through in another 150 for a Stupid WiFi card. Yea they make good stuff.... but what the heck is wrong with this.
Just got a little tinny GPS that fits in the CF slot..... what an invention.

2. I really found after experience that Pocket PC is a superior system. You would not even need a Keyboard anymore with the nbuilt in Subscriber. You write and write. with your own cursive, and here it is ... nice and typed.

3. More and more software are now being made for both. PC software much more versatile.

Too many things to compare....
or not to compare ...that is the question.

Look around keep your eyes open. and Try things first. I tell you just go and try the PPC system.
