Hi, I've got a Psion 5MX with a broken screen. Will a screen from a series 5 work on this machine. Has anyone else carried out this type of repair and if so how easy/difficult was it?
Thanks, Harky

I know that the cabling changed between the 5 and 5mx, but the actual screen components mights be the same? If your 5mx screen cables are fine (and you're really good at soldering!) then you might be successful. Check my FAQ for a list of sites that show the 5 & 5mx disassembled - you might be able to tell if its possible from some of the pictures. Harky 09-26-2002, 09:42 AM Thanks for that Diem. I might have to bite the bullet and buy a second-hand 5MX on E-Bay. Unfortunately I'm on a tight budget. I originally bought the 5MX because it was so cheap (£195) that I could'nt help myself. I'd only had it three months when it slipped off my car seat onto the floor. This was enough to crack the screen and stop the touch sensitivity from working. I've gone back to my 3C. Such is life. (I laughed at the spotty Herbert in Dixons when he tried to sell me a warrenty package. I'm not laughing so hard now.) Do you think the screens suceptability to damage contributed to Psions descision to stop makin them? If I buy another one I'll get a pod for it but this sort of comprimises its sleek sexiness, doesn't it? Best Regards, Harky diem 09-26-2002, 10:19 AM Originally posted by Harky Do you think the screens suceptability to damage contributed to Psions descision to stop makin them? No, they only stopped because they could see that the PDA market was getting musled in on by volume production and margins were dropping rapidly. Psion are a technology company - good on ideas and new concepts, not good on marketing and selling - and were just not of the right culture to be a volume PDA manufacturer, so they quit while they were ahead. The irony is that they've actually started to produce the 5mx again because demand is so high! There's no way they'll develop a new consumer PDA, but its good business sense to churn out a successful design if a profit can be made. Thanks, Harky The Series 5 and 5mx screens are quite definitely not interchangeable Harky 09-27-2002, 03:11 AM Thanks for that Mike. I'll just bite the bullet and buy a replacement. Paulos72 09-27-2002, 05:41 AM if you come across a surplus mc218 let me know - I've also got a knackered screen and the repair costs are uneconomical! cyberneticist 09-28-2002, 07:30 AM I know it's been a while, since the last posting on this forum, but just to let you know that Psion will replace the screen of a 5MX if it breaks for £100! It happened to me as well. I had one of the original Psion 5MX's on the market, and the replacement screen came from one of the new sort, which was a better quality screen and much less prone to scratching! PDA Street
