This is so cool!
I now have ripped movies onto my memory sticks and play them on my NX70 in widescreen mode.
A complete 2 hour movie fits onto two 128 Memory Sticks.
Picture quality is fantastic! Great sound too (on headset).
It plays with the Viewer included with the Clie.
This is great for the traveller who considered paying $1,000 for a portable DVD player... LOL
I'm thrilled with this unit. No Tungsten can compare to this baby.
:p

For us novices, can you give us a quick run down on how you did that?
What a great way to enjoy your clie'.

After surfing around looking everywhere for this software, I actually found it within my new computer's preloaded software.
It is called Clie Converter and part of the Giga Pocket software package.
It converts movies to your choice of either:
gMovie or
Movie Player
formats.
Very easy to use.
Enjoy!

Could you possibly explain to me how you can take a video file from a dvd?
I have gigapocket software on my new Sony PC.
I was able to record a tv show and convert it using the clie converter but I don't understand how to take a dvd disk and convert the files on that?
It doesn't seem to be able to read them when I use the clie explorer software?
Any help would be appreciated....
Thanks in advance!

I am just wondering if you ripped your movies from a DVD, or did you use another format? I am still a novice using Giga Pocket. I can't seem to get it to read a normal DVD. Works great for me using any other source except the DVDs.
Thanks for any help you can offer me...

You cannot copy DVDs that are"copy protected" without appropriate software. There are many packages available for this task.

get the Gordian Knot package:
http://gknot.doom9.org/
It will install two very useful programs: SmartRipper and DVD2AVI
Use SmartRipper to rip the .vob files off the DVD. Use DVD2AVI to make the .dv2 project file and extract AC3 sound.
get a copy of HeadAC3he from:
http://mitglied.lycos.de/darkav/svcdguide/svcd.html
and use that to convert AC3 to .wav for the sound.
get a copy of TMPGEnc from:
http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html
and use that with the .dv2 file as video source and the .wav as audio and output to .mpg
you can also install the Tsunami Filter Pack as well if you get complaints about not having the right codec for some movie:
http://www.filemirrors.com/search.src?file=tsunami_filter_pack_3_8_9_mini.exe
all of these are free and once you get used to using them pretty simple. takes me about 5 minutes to do my part then about 5 hours for my computer to do its part

which preferences are useful for transormation into clielike mpegfiles? do i use mpeg1 and which datarate? is it possible to use mpeg2? ..... i think if i use mpeg1 the mpg-file would be more than 256MB on a 90 min video?????????? do you have some suggestions???
the clie supports mpeg4!-how can i create working mpeg4 files????
thanks for your answers ....

dont use the little wizard thing that pops up to try and help you, click cancel on that and on the main screen of the program browse for both your video (.dv2) and sound (.wav) check to make sure the output file is going to where you want it. then assuming this is a dvd rip click on "setting" then "advanced" and put a check next to "inverse telecine" then click "ok"
Then click the the start button and go take a nap or drink a case of beer or drive to a distant city and back.
when its done you convert that file with sony's image converter. set it for either long play (about 1 meg per minute) or standard (about 2 megs per minute).

is there no encoder which transforms the avi-file (the ripped DVD file) into a sony clie file? i loss quality if i first encode into mpeg1 and after them into cliempg! and of course it takes a lot more time ...
i read that the clie supports mpeg4 - there are different spezifications in the web - somewhere i found an article that the sony uses the mpeg4 from apple/quicktime. you can use the quicktime pro 6.0 to encode an avi directly into mpeg4! but the file does not work on the clie. there are different other encoder for mpeg4 - but no file was working on the clie! does someone know which kind of mpeg4 the sony wants to have???

i dont know of anything like that. if there was something like that it would make larger sized files im sure. thats fine once the larger sticks are out but who wants to carry around craploads of sticks just to watch a movie on thier clie?. i guess if your looking for top quality high resolution maybe you could get a portable dvd player.

you loose quality with every compression - and saving into mpeg with tmpec ist one compression and converting to sonyfileformat the second compression (decoding) .... we only need a tool which decodes avi to mpeg4 - the quality of mpeg4 ist better than mpeg 1 from tmpeg and the filesize is smaller! for more information look her: http://home.rmi.net/~lutz/pic21_video.html

Err, a portable dvd player cost less than $500 now. it has better quality and sound. nv70 plus 2 memory stick plus case, etc will cause over $1000.
I'll take the portable dvd anytime. w/out the hassle.

When the portable DVD player can fit in your pocket, play movies without carrying around large breakable discs, take photos, shoot movies, play MP3s, send and receive e-mails, embed photos in the e-mails, hold all of my important information, work all of my stereo components, record lectures and meetings, play games, communicate with PCs and Bluetooth phones, etc, etc ...then THAT would be one impressive DVD player. But right now it is called a Clie. And yes, it fits into your pocket. With the movies.
I have put many a movie onto memory sticks and it is literaly a few clicks. But then, I have the proper software.
I won't be going back to lugging around a portable DVD player, and all those discs. Now THAT's a hassle .... :)

IF I MAY ASK, HOW DID YOU GET MOVIES ONTO YOUR CLIE? THAT WOULD BE A VERY NICE THING TO HAVE ON THE ROAD.
YKZ_Pilot
01-11-2003, 09:41 AM
Sony's GigaPocket software.
Yes, it's great on the road ... you can even get an adapter to play the sound through your vehicle's stereo system, and save buying an expensive vehicle LCD movie player. If you have multiple vehicles then the payoff is even greater.
