Hi,
I have a revo and I'm still fairly new at this. My problem is that I can't connect and sync with my PC. I have done this once and have not been able to do it since. I have the software all in place...I think..and I downloaded 1.1.
The line at the bottom is wiggly and all appears ok, but any icon I hit (back up, sync) doesn't work. I have win 98 and use Microsoft Outlook. I have been in and out of help that many times I am drained..... I am also not sure about the baud rate??? On my PC it's set at "maximum attainable" my revo is set at 19200.
In my psion properties under "other options"I have start it marked on "copyanywhere at connection not series 3".
Thanks Guys.

I have the software all in place...I think..and I downloaded 1.1You should be using the version of PsiWin which came on the CD with your Revo and this will probably be 2.3.1 or 2.3.2

Version 1.1 of PsiWin is an old application originally released for use with Series 3 devices and its file converters are very dated. It will, however, still allow connection to a PC for file transfers and backup.

I am also not sure about the baud rate??? On my PC it's set at "maximum attainable" my revo is set at 19200Try setting both to 57600 and, if that connects reliably, increase to 115200. Make sure that in PsiWin properties, only the COM port that the docking cradle is connected to has been selected.

Until you are connecting reliably, uncheck the box for "Start CopyAnywhere at connection".

See if that gets you any further forward.

Hi thankyou very much for your reply.
I have altered the baud rate on PC and revo to 57600 and I have unclicked the options box.
Yes I am using version 2.3
I still can't connect.
What happens is, I double click on the my psion icon sometimes nothing happens other times it opens up to a folder called My psion and there is a big question mark in there that says "not connected' although I have a wriggley line bottom left, denoting that its connected. My revo says its "active".
If I right click on "my psion" and click any one of the things there...sync, back up etc....nothing happens???
Perhaps there is a basic fundemantal thing I am missing here???
Should I delete the 1.1 version. I only downloaded it a couple of months ago when I asked how to get started?

This is very odd!!
Thank you klm

OK, I would suggest you uninstall whichever version of PsiWin 2 you have and reinstall it.

Uninstall it from Add / Remove in Control Panel, then run the PsiWin Registry Cleaner, which you can download from the Series 5 page of my website (last item on that page), then close all running applications and reinstall it.

PsiWin 1.1 shouldn't cause any conflicts. I have 1.1 and 2.3.1 both installed in a PC running Win 98se.

Hi Mike
I uninstalled the version 2.3. For some reason I couldn't download your pswin registry cleaner. The download dialogue box came up but it just didn't download. I tried a dozen times.
I noticed that all the psion software had gone including icons, so I went ahead and re-installed the 2.3 and selected sync, converter and email sync.
All looked good, but it didn't happen. Not even a wriggly line this time. I keep thinking there is something really simple that I missed. No connecting at all.
Baud rate is still on 57600 and I unclicked the options once again.
Help!!!

For some reason I couldn't download your pswin registry cleaner. The download dialogue box came up but it just didn't download. Are you sure? It is only 7k and downloads in a flash! I've just downloaded to check but here is a copy. Please do run this between uninstalling and reinstalling so that you get a "clean" install with nothing left in the registry from previous attempts.

Maybe I'm going mad!! I uninstalled it all again then downloaded your file from the link here. It went into winzip and all I can open up is two notepad documents.

Here is a copy of newclean.inf which is the PsiWin
registry cleaner. Place it on the desktop, right click
the file and then choose install. Then immediately
reboot the PC. Upon the next restart the registry will
be cleaned. This file also helps with getting rid of
the MY PSION icon should for some reason that icon be
left behind during a poor uninstall.

Ok, on my desktop I have a reg. cleaner txt icon...no right click options to install. sorry...........

There is a file called "newclean.inf" - extract both files from the .zip archive then right click this .inf file and from the menu select install. You will see absolutely nothing happen. Reboot the PC and the registry will have been cleaned. The newclean.inf file doesn't need to be on the desktop, you can put it anywhere you want as long as you can find it :)

Hey Mike,
you are so patient!!!
I did it!! Now we are back to where we started............we have a wriggly line...........but nothing else connects. I have a fresh PC though and I'm ready to start again.........if that's ok with you!!

MikeMcC

Starting again from scratch:
In PsiWin 'Properties' make sure only the COM port the Psion is connected to is selected; that the same speed is selected in PsiWin properties and in the Psion's 'Link' settings (try 57600); that CopyAnywhere does not launch automatically.

After installation, the PsiWin server is started when the PC boots and the server icon is in the system tray, though it will be a flat line if not actively connected to a Psion. Right click on this and select 'Close'.

Connect the Psion, set the 'Link' to Cable and 57600. Now, on the PC, open Windows Explorer and click on "My Psion". The connection server should reappear in the system tray and change to the moving sine wave (wriggly line!) as the Psion connects. If it does, icons should appear in the right window - the Psion's C drive, Sync, Backup, Properties. If the 'wriggly line' shows you are connected but Win Explorer still shows the 'Not connected' icon, press F5 on the PC keyboard to refresh the display and see if that shows the connected icons.

Hi,
Ok I did all of that and I can get the wriggly line but the "not connected" sign in My psion.
The com ports??? In properies I have have com1 and com2 ticked. I have tried various version of 1& 2 etc but still no progress.
???????

In properies I have have com1 and com2 ticked. Only tick the COM port the Psion is connected to - one of them will show the wiggly line when connected, the other won't. Use the one that does.

klm
09-27-2002, 02:49 AM
I am amazed at how quick this is!!.
In properties, under connections there isn't any wiggly line beside either com 1 and com 2. They are both ticked though The only wiggly line is bottom left.
I have no idea which com port the psion should be using.
This is getting so tedious for you!

We'll get u there klm!

Check my FAQ at the URL in my signature below. In it (under 'Connecting to a desktop/laptop computer') there's help about serial connections, including how to tell which COM port you are connecting to.

BTW, Mike was talking about the wiggly line in your tray, he waas not suggesting that there would be lines on the Properties dialog box.

diem,
We'll get u there klm! I know that there can be severe problems getting PsiWin to connect, i.e. getting the initial connection between PC and Psion, but once this is running I cannot understand why Windows Explorer wouldn't be displaying the correct icons and the Revo's "C" drive. This is even stranger after a reg clean and fresh install.

klm,

When you uninstalled, ran the reg cleaner and reinstalled, did PsiWin bring up a dialog box saying it had found a new machine or simply open an explorer window with the 'not connected icon'?

If it did not say it found a new machine, go to:

Start > Programs > PsiWin 2.3 > Machine Manager

and delete any reference to your existing machine. When you next connect, you should be asked to set it up as a new machine. That might get you further forward.

This used to happen to me with Win98 but I was always trying to connect using Infrared so I figured it was some Infrared weirdness. Since then I have had a hard disk crash so I cannot recall what it was I did that fixed the problem, but I do remember figuring out a way to get it to work reliably.

I'll post over the weekend if I am able to figure it out....

"Check my FAQ at the URL in my signature below. In it (under 'Connecting to a desktop/laptop computer') there's help about serial connections, including how to tell which COM port you are connecting to."

Thankyou I did this, and went into Hyper Terminal. There I found 6 icons. AT & T Mail.ht, Compuserve, Hypertrm.exe, MCI Mail ht., hticons.dll. I opened each one up but couldn't find anything on cpm ports Hypertum dll.
Hypertum dll. snd hticons.dll Went into "open a programme with". Not sure where to go to from here. Sorry I couldn't figure out where I should go!!

Ok thanks for this....yes I was looking for it in the properties dialog box!!

Hi Mike,
No ...it didn't bring up a dialog box saying a new machine found.

I went through the exercise and there was nothing listed in machine manager to delete......???? I have re-booted anyway, but nothing has happened!

Hi Mike
Ok..we might have moved a bit further!! I repeated everything again and when I tried to connect again it did ask me to name the new machine. I did that and then it opened up a blank page headed "new connection". I just clicked this off????
What's happening now??? I have wriggly line in tray and that is all. I cannot open up any icons!!

Let's go back to the beginning. Reboot the PC then go straight to
Start > Programs > PsiWin 2.3 > Machine Manager, delete all details of any machines and click OK to close the box.

Connect the Revo and set the Link to 'Cable' and 57600 baud. Open Windows Explorer and click on "My Psion". PsiWin should try to connect. If it does, the icon will "wiggle" and it should recognise a new machine. Enter a name and click OK. It should now display the various icons.

If it didn't display the box for a new machine, minimise the Explorer window in case the box is sitting behind Explorer. If so, enter a name and click OK. Restore Win Explorer and see if it has connected.

If it didn't connect - line didn't wiggle and a dialog box said it couldn't connect - right click the line icon, select properties and check that only the COM port with the Psion connected is selected and the speed is set to 57600. It should now connect.

Glad to see that you worked it out, but for the record, it was an application called webwasher. I installed it to act as a popup and popunder blocker but it also caused PsiWin to act as I described.

Maybe I can add some thoughts? I bought a Revo myself recently and it's not like the 3a or the 5 I used to have. The docking station has to 'click' in, which can be tricky - and unlike the 3 and 5 I've found I need the psion docked and turned on when I boot up (I'm running Win ME btw).

If it then disconnects, the only way I can get it to work again is to reboot. This also works on installing stuff, so for example, I've just downloaded some software from this site and when I double click the sis file, nothing happens. I now need to shut down and restart the pc to get it to work.

Oh, and one last thing as well, I find it only seems to work when the Revo is NOT displaying an open program. So make sure the screen is showing your system/explorer and not Word, or anything else.

See if that helps!

Kind regards

David

Thanks David,
this is valuable learning stuff that will be a great help in the future. I'm still learning how to do the basics. By the way did you get a backlight with your revo?
klm

Demonlawyer
09-29-2002, 10:30 AM
Nope - the Revo's don't come with a backlight - just the series 5's (and some series 3's) but the backlight really ate battery power anyway and a lot of series 5 users have had problems with it anyway so you're not really missing out much. If it helps, there are programs out there that have similar functions to the programs on the 5. For example, you can download sketch for the revo, which I think should have been included in the first place, and yesterday I found a similar program to record for the revo, although I haven't used it yet.

Do however have a hunt for freeware and shareware - there's some great stuff out there - for example Psion's website has a download for Who Wants to be a Millionaire for free. It does have problems for the first game or two but then it works fine and is pretty impressive. It is however good at showing you just what the Revo can manage. Also try the game No Man's Land - again it shows you what the Revo can do if it puts it's mind to it. I also like the mahjongg game I found on this site (I think).

Just download loads of things, shut down and restart if need be, install them all and see which ones you want to keep. Use Add/Remove to get rid of the ones you don't like and hey presto - a customised Revo just the way you want it!

Thanks David! I'm still trying to work out how to save files and folders at this stage...let alone downloading anything extra onto the revo!!! What is sketch??
Do you find your revo is ok in most lights? I know you can get backlights put into the revo, but I don't know if it can be done here in Oz.
The other things you're talking about ...are they games that you play on your revo??
Thanks Again;)

Demonlawyer

Don't worry about saving things - one of the cool things about the Psions is that they save the moment you tap. Seriously, it's all saved the second you type it in. As for browsing, if you are comfortable using Windows Explorer then go to system and click files on the right hand side. That will show you the windows style folders where everything is kept. There must be a manual for these things somewhere, but I admit I didn't get one with my revo. Try looking for a series 5 manual on the web as they're very similar, but also if you are in system (ie not in a program) then click on FN and Help both keys on the bottom. That will bring up a help menu which will explain most things to you, including how the points are scored on that cascade ball game :) Yes those programs are games, but there are loads of utilities out there too. There's even a web page with eBooks of lots of famous authors, but I can't remember where to find it. a good search engine would find it though

Maybe I can add some thoughts? I bought a Revo myself recently and it's not like the 3a or the 5 I used to have I would like to think that your experience with connecting a Revo is not shared by other users.

I have PsiWin 2.3.1 in a Win 98SE PC and PsiWin 2.3.3 in a Win XP PC and I can connect and disconnect the Revo (and 3c, S5 and 5mx) as much as I like without having to reboot or have any Psion connected beforehand.

In all of the time I have had my S5, 5mx and Revo, I have never installed any software by running a .SIS file on the PC. I have always transferred .SIS files to the Psion and run them there.

Don't worry about saving things - one of the cool things about the Psions is that they save the moment you tap. Seriously, it's all saved the second you type it in. What complete and utter rubbish! Try performing a soft reset without saving a Word or Sheet file and see what happens.

I was doing something this morning which involved transferring a file from PC to Revo, disconnecting to use the Revo with an external PC modem, then reconnecting to copy a log file from Revo to PC and I just clicked the icon and selected 'Connect'.
It might help if you didn't have PsiWin launching automatically when you boot the PC. To do this remove the shortcut in:

C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\

You then start PsiWin either by double clicking "My Psion" on the desktop or opening Windows Explorer and clicking on "My Psion". The very first thing I do after installing PsiWin is to remove its shortcut so that it doesn't launch on booting the PC. This might let you connect without having to reboot and also, after using PsiWin, close it down again by right clicking the 'wiggly' line and selecting 'Close'.

I've never had the need to reset my Psion in any way, and I've never lost a document on any Psion and I'm sure it was Psion themselves who told me that back in '95. Presumably you have had this happen though so I'll take your word for it.
I'll try installing via the straight to Revo route next time, but I have Psiwin 2.3.3 with Win ME and if I could video it on the pc I'd show you. Resetting works for me, but maybe I'm in a minority on this.
It's not the best of pics but this shows my desktop with the psion connected (at the bottom) but My Psion won't establish a connection.

I have Psiwin 2.3.3 with Win ME Is there any particular reason for using 2.3.3 with Win ME? You might get better reliability with an earlier version such as 2.3.1, if that's what was supplied with the Psion.

2.3.3 is the version which was updated for compatibility with Windows 2000 (and is now also required for XP).

Demonlawyer
09-30-2002, 03:01 PM
2.3.3 is the version I got with the Revo. I think I might still have my 2.0 about somewhere, but the series 5 i had then was the first batch where the serial link had a design fault, so I'm not sure how good the software would be. Appreicate your suggestion though.

Also for the other guy, I just had a thought I think I saw that the manual for the 5 and probably therefore the revo is on the CD rom.

Cheers Mike
