The theory goes that in the Inbox, you tap Tools/Options.../ then the Storage tab and you "only" have to click the box beside "Store Attachments on storage card". All right, I'm getting different actual result than what the theory predicted... it don't work.

At the top of that page, there are 3 lines:

Main Memory (xxxKB free)
Storage Card (not installed)
Current size of attachments (xxxKB)

Of course, there IS a SD card in the Unit!!! I removed it, re-inserted it. No avail. I can access it and the files on it through the File Explorer, and there is plenty of of free sapce to accomodate the attachements.

If I select the box, the PPC hourglass shows up inthe middle of the screen, goes away after 10 sec, then nothing. If I want to leave that page, I have to uncheck the box.

Anybody had the same problem?

(Dell Axim PPC 2002, using the default Inbox)

This has been well documented. You are confusing the definition of Storage Card.

The AXIM default "Storage Card" is the "Built-in Storage" area that comes with the AXIM (flash Rom). This is the 21.24MB memory area.

It is not your SD Card

The default options for attachments in PPCs with flash rom is ONLY this memory.

There is a well known registry hack that DOES allow you to change the attachment storage location from "Built-in Storage" to SD Card.

Seach the DELL forums and you will find the instructions. It is very easy to do. It requires you to copy the Inbox.mst... folder and contents to your SD card and then changing the registry entry in the MAPI folder of the registry to point to the SD card instead of the Built-in Storage.

It works without problems (I've been configured this way for months).

kpduty,
Now, I'm even more confused! ;) On that option page, why does it say 'Storage Card (not installed)' and then below the check box is for 'Store attachments on storage card'?

I follow what you're saying about defaults in the ROM, makes sense. But one ouwld assume that a choice to 'Store attachments on storage card' actually means what it says...

I agree . . . it is confusing . . . Blame MS . . .

I don't have an explanation for why your AXIM is saying Storage Card (not installed).

It's possible your Flash Rom area has been corrupted.

If you know how to use the System Information utility in the settings folder, you should execute it and it will make a sysinfo.txt file in your My Documents folder.

This text file should look something like this:

Model: Dell Axim X5
CPU: Intel® PXA250 400 MHz B2 Stepping
Flash: 28F192 / 48 MB
RAM: 64 MB
ROM Version: A03 (04100300EN)
OS Version: 3.0.11171 (Build 11178)
CF: Not In Use
SD: In Use
Storage Size:
SD: 120.03MB / 24.00MB
IPSM: 21.24MB / 21.24MB

The IPSM is the Flash Rom area. If your Axim doesn't show something, you should look into the cause and possibly return the unit if you determine it's defective.

This is getting better and better... I ran the System information, and the file was created in a Folder named Sysinfo under My Document, and the file read Exactly like yours. For the IPSM, it actually read 21.24MB/20.30MB I guess becasue I have something saved in there.

At work, I check with 2 coworkers whom have Axim and they both had a reading of some number of KB free in that space, and were able to select it as an option to store into. No ideas as to why mine would say not installed. Very strange... Might have to contact Dell on that one... (did you hear the sigh of agony?! :(

All right, I had a problem with my Inbox not seeing my ROM built in storage, so I proceeded with a Hard Reset after a friend's suggestion. That cured the Inbox Problem!

Yeah!

Now, the WIFi doesn't work.

Ugh?!

From a clean Axim, I re-installed the drivers and all through the craddle ActiveSynch (I made sure to re-identify properly my device first). It Synched fine and I got all my data back. Except that even after the install, the WiFi didn't work anymore.

If I set the connection settings to Work, it tries to connect but then after a few seconds comes up 'not connected'. If I set the connections settings to Internet, PIE tells me that it can't find the page.

The WiFi is a Linksys WCF12. I did do a back up prior to, and even with a restore it still doesn't work (and the Inbox problem is back!) I removed the WiFi using the CD that came with it, and then re-install it. No avail.

Okay, did a harder reset.

Tried everything I knew about my firewall (which was seeing the CF Card and giving it an IP) and my PDA to try to get the WiFi working. I then realized that the only time I was successful in installing the CF card was when I had a clean PDA and a clean PC.

I removed the secondary battery on the Axim and uninstalled ActiveSynch from the PC. I re-installed the software on the PC, then on the Ax. I turned the Ax on/off a time or two until the firewall saw it and gave it an IP. Tadam! Everything worked fine thereafter and all my PIM data re-synchronize nicely.

Beats me as to what was in ActiveSynch or left in the PDA after a hard reset that was preventing the WiFi to work. It's working fine for me, but if somebody knows it may be benifical to post it 'for the record'

Oh... and I can now save my email attachments in the built-in storage! ;)
