I have a friend with an early S7, build 751, who is interested in the upgrade to netBook, but apprehensive about whether it will work.

I know that some of you have done this, and I don't recall any specific reports of failure, so far. Would those with experience post some brief comments, please?

I apologise if you have already posted info, but the messages are spread about a bit, and I think it would be helpful to have a summary of experiences in one place for that specific build of the S7.

Thanks everyone :)

I did this about a year ago and wished I'd done it sooner. My build 754 (not 751) S7 repeatedly locked up, particularly when taken from a cold environment into a warm one.

Although I'm an apprehensive non-techie, I followed the instructions on Eirik Newths Series 7 site and had no problems at all.

Just don't forget to back-up first!

Find Eirik's site at: http://newth.net/psion7/

Hi Colin

I think we may have a misunderstanding here - I guess my post was not too clear.

I'm talking about the replacement board for S7 which effectively gives it most of the netBook's capability, including the extra processor speed and upgradeable OS. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think possibly you are referring to the 16Mb DIMM memory upgrade for your S7?

I don't think there is anything on Eirik Newth's site about the upgrade to netBook, or "7book" as we are now calling it, unless anyone can tell me otherwise.

I'm specifically looking for opinions here from people who have done the conversion to 7book from a Build 751 S7.

Apologies If I created any confusion. :)

Hi Julie

Mine was a 751 Series 7 and the upgrade is fine with the exception of the PCMCIA WLAN and LAN cards as mentioned in previous threads. Particularly welcome is the extra processing speed. I have seen no stability problems.

My 7 was originally 751 (on the chip)and I experienced VERY bad screen calibration problems, this was not resolved upgrading to the 756 OS build. However, using the personality upgrade and installing the 758 build, ALL of my problems have gone, though, I have not tried using any ethernet connectivity. I use mine in conjunction with a hi-res camera and IGB microdrive and speed increase has not been that noticeable, but since removing 7000 plus web pages, speed has improved. If I remove a large proportion of citymaps, I think it will probably increase still further.

I just put in an old 128MB CF instead of microdrive with little on it and it is buzzing along merrily - well worth the upgrade to iron out the long term problems I had.

Worked no problems with me(build 751 machine) (once I managed to fix an awol monitor cable!), seems to connect at a higher speed with my gprs phone now which is a little strange? (Very welcome though) Speed increase is nice as well - doom for instance is now playable!

Yet to take the plunge and start testing network cards, but that will be soon...

yep, mine is a 751 too.
Upgraded to Netbook ok (opera, faster processor etc etc) although I've yet to get ethernet working - I havn't got a supported card to try.

Thanks Nick, nmb, Monkfish and spegru! This sounds very encouraging for everyone with one of the earlier build S7s.

Aware of the possible snags Ethernet-wise, but putting that aside, I think most people will find this a very worthwhile upgrade.

I upgraded my 751 build S7 specifically to get the WLAN and LAN connectivity.

Unfortunately, apart from the speed increase (nice, but not really worth it) this was a disaster as i haven't been able to get a single WLAN card to work!

It seems that now we at least have a reasonably clear picture, and anyone thinking of the upgrade to 7Book can take all of that into consideration.

Great shame about the WLAN, stumac.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Did you see that nclark got his wlan card working on a 751 machine?
