Just arrived back from france, turned on my psion 7 to backup ready for installation of the netbook rom I've purchased to find to my horror that it's died on me (it was fine when I used it the other end of a tube journey, but there you go...). I think it's the screen that's died, i.e. not coming on etc. - anyone any ideas about troubleshooting the machine and or taking it apart to try and fix it ?

You could try the following:

1) Plug in your main supply - Hopefully the charge light will appear
2) Plug in your serial cable between your p7 and switched on PC.
2) Enter any password carefully (if one exists) and press enter
3) Click on the EPOC silkscreen button on the right and lower corner of your screen
4) Click on ctrl+l
5) If you always leave your link to desktop off then press the right arrow once and press enter
6) Try and connect to your psion from your PC. If this works then back up as normal. If you tend to leave apps open then it may struggle with these files.
7) If you can't connect then the problem could be more than the screen and you may have lost everything anyway. Hopefully you keep your data on the CF Card so you won't loose too much.
8) Finally I would try a hard reset if that don't work then I think your P7 needs to go to the repair shop !!

Hope this helps a little but if you have other specific symptoms then post them here.

Regards

Si

Seeing as how the problem has occurred so suddenly, perhaps one of the cables connecting to the screen has pulled out? If you're up for a bit of dismantling, check my FAQ at the URL below for a list of guides to dismantling the Series 7.

Fortunately it was the screen cable having come unclipped, and its really easy to clip back in just by taking the two plastic panels at the top of the keyboard out (it's the white clip underneath the plastic bridge). All works again, and without a screwdriver :)

The netbook upgrade worked without a hitch too :)

Now I just need to find network cards that will work (looks like keeping my eyes glued to the forum)

Thanks for the help
