advice if you may, i have managed to download some prc files that end .rar and when trying to instal them on my pda they want to go straight to the mmc/sd.

when i sync with the pc, my hoysync tells me the programme couldnt be instal as it didnt have the correct programme to open it on the palm

what am i doing wrong, do i need an additional programme on my palm or do your have to change the file extension somehow

cheers

you need winrar on your desktop go to http://www.rarlab.com/ and download it they have 30 day trial and then you have to buy it. winrar is better then winzip in that it can open zip files and rar files.

...I've never heard of the .rar extension. Is it a type of compression format? If so, is it for the handheld, or the desktop, or both?

Just when I thought I was getting the hang of it all...they have to add more stuff to learn. :p

Frankly, I have never heard of a .rar format for the Palm OS. Are you certain that this downloaded .rar file does not open with Winrar or any rar archiver? And by opening, I don't mean double-clicking on it.

If double-clicking on the file sends it to quick install instead of opening the rar file, then something changed the default file associations in your OS.

The reason the rar file is sent to the card is because for all files of unknown type (not PDB, PRC, JPEG, etc.), a quick install command will cause it to be sent to the card as it is not allowed by the OS to reside in the Palm's memory. After installation, as there is no program to read it, you get the hotsync error message that you mentioned. Try it with other files of different extensions, and you'll likely run into the same result.

open winrar and drag the files from the quick install abd drop them in winrar that should convert them. then double click to send them back to quick install.

yo lion I think the rar. is a foriegn compression file such as russion or somthing like that.... its kind of a pain in the butt but i have found that winrar is better then winzip in that it can open just about any kind of commpesed file including zip.

For decompressing any file like .zip or .rar or any other I would recomend Power Archiver and I think you can get it here www.download.com .

I could not find a program anything like 'pocket professional' to see what you are talking about. (I am guessing that this is the file you are referring to- it is difficult to translate your posts sometimes)

However, .rar is NOT a Palm-readable format and it is being placed on the card by default.

You WILL need to open the program on your main computer and then install the program the usual way. .rar programs are relatively rare, but I agree that WinRar is a good program for this. (Dirty Dog- I agree that it is probably Russian- I see it most often on files from Russian archives!)
