AIM & WiFi Messages While in Pocket

I'm a palm user considering switching to either an IPAQ h5555 or an AXIM X5 with a dell wifi card. I have a wifi network at home and at work.

I was wondering what happens when you login to aim and then walk around with the PDA in your pocket.

When it enters into sleep mode will it beep when I receive a message or will I need to disable sleep mode and burn right through the battery? Just looking for your experiences. I appreciate your input.

I'll try to remember to do this at home later... I rarely run instant messaging clients and generally use WiFi just for short bursts but I'll see what happens.
