More bother on the nb upgrade for me. I've entered all of my connection settings as per my 7, or at least I think I have as far as the Internet settings and Email account settings, not sure about the infrared modem settings, never checked what they were before upgrading. Now when I try to connect I always get the following : "Problem communicating with Internet service's modem. Call was unexpectedly dropped". I can make the connection to the same dial up number on my PC/landline therefore it cannot be a problem at the other end. Anyone have any ideas ?. I feel totally crippled without mobile email access, sign of the times I guess.

The first question is, what type of modem are you using to connect to the 'net? Is it a mobile phone, a PC Card, or a wired or IR external modem?

Second question would be, how did you restore your 7 backup?

I'm using a mobile phone modem.
After I had installed the upgrade, I simply connected the 7 to my PC whereby it prompted me to perform a restore as it didn't detect the data that had originally been on the 7. I performed the restore which installed all the apps I had previously on the C drive. Was this the wrong thing to do ?

I'm afraid it was. Supplied in the zip file with the netBook OS is a readme file, explaining the upgrade procedure. What you've done is restore a system file from the 7 that is not compatible with the netBook OS - its the file that stores all your comms settings (C:\System\Data\CommsDB.dat), so no wonder you're seeing problems!

I'm afraid you will have to take your batteries out and start again, but this time follow the procedure in the readme.

Thanks Yan, that was my fear. I though that I could delete this file then just re-enter my connection details from control panel thus re-creating the same set up as before. Oh well, I'll be busy again tonight!!!

Yan I am not sure Robin has to reinstall from scratch again. Robin before you do that, try this (hopefully it will save a rebuild).

1) Write down your modem and internet settings.
2) Go to c:\system\data and delete the commsdb.dat file
3) Manually re-enter your modem and internet settings
4) Try your mobile and hopefully it should work ok.

If you still get problems then follow Yan's advice but instead of restoring directly from backup, reinstall software manually and copy accross your .ini & reg files manually.

Let us know how you get on.

Si, this is exactly what I have done, which is why I am confused as to the problem .I followed these instructions as posted on a previous thread, deleted the file and re-entered the settings for internet and email accounts manually. I think I have covered everything however I didn't check the infrared modem settings I had previously. I've tried changing the baud reate but this makes no difference. Perhaps there is some other setting hidden away I don't know about. I'm not very "au fait" with the technicalities therefore it is feasible I have missed something although I can't think what. Very frustrating.

fair comment - that should work - perhaps I'm a little too "belt and braces" at times :D

Presumably you're using the 'Infrared mobile phone' modem setting? One thing that might work is changing the modem type in the advanced tab from 'mobile' to 'fixed line'. That aside, Mike McConnell's superb site list the complete settings required for many different types of phone. Check www.mikemcc.net.

What you can do is restore your old backed up 7 commsdb.dat file and check out the modem settings in the control panel. Write down everything, particularly the initialisation and advanced settings. DO NOT TRY AND CONNECT WITH THIS COMMSDB.DAT FILE LOADED. Delete the old 7 commsdb.dat file from your machine and you should now know what to enter when you manually set up your modems again.

What phone do you have? Do you have phoneman pro or the like? Can you talk to your phone using this?

Other things to check.

Did you ever install the mobile phone connectivity update patch on your 7? (mind you I could be harping back to my 5mx with this).
If you did then there could be some extra comms data or the like that is getting in the way.

If this is the case, rather than resintalling your OS completely, try wiping the entire C:/system folder (take a backup first). This will restore your unit to as it was after the OS installed (apart from all those example docs). If you still cannot connect then I think it may be a settings thing not a psion thing.

Si, what is the implication of trying to connect, using the comms file copied from the original series 7 backup data ?. I did actually do this at one stage in frustration.

Nothing serious to your machine but there have been reports that:

a) it just doesn't work (big deal)
b) the machine may soft reset when you try to connect (which can be annoying as you may have to change some icons around).

Neither are permenant and both are resolved by deleting the commsdb.dat file and letting the NB OS create it's own.

OK. I shall have one final attempt. I'll delete the file and re-enter all connection details. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks,

It is worth a try if nothing else.

Don't forget the following order:

1) Copy old 7 commsdb.dat file onto 7book.
2) Go to Control Panel and check Modem settings. Write down all the modem settings for the modems you used on your 7. Don't forget to write down your internet settings aswell as these will need to be re-added too.
3) Delete commsdb.dat file from 7book
4) Go back to modem settings (which should be reset to factory default settings and create a new NB commsdb.dat file)
5) Create/edit a modem for you mobile and other modems
6) Create internet connection settings
7) On the root c: directory, create a folder called Logs and within this create a folder called Etel. So you should now have a blank folder c:\Logs\Etel.
8) Try and connect with your mobile. If it still doesn't work then post your log here. Also confirm your mobile and current IR Mobile Modem settings.

Hi,
Just thought I'd let you all know that I now have a connected 7book after all the bother. Replacing the comms file did the trick.
Thanks,

Robin
