Alas, my iQue 3600 has just been shipped...I can finally stop checking my email every 30 seconds and get some sleep. :)
By the way they're in stock at:
http://gpsworldsupply.com/gps_world_supply.php?step=productinfo&productNum=010-00264-00
Anyway, I tried looking through the threads and couldn't find any guidance in this area:
Who makes the fastest SD Memory Card? I was interested in getting the 512 MB size, although if the 256 is faster I'll order that.
And who has the best prices on the SD Memory Cards?

Lexar seems to be fastest and probably most reliable. I doubt the speed is noticeable when calculating but you may see a difference when downloading.

I think there isn't much difference in the major brands. Just remember that the advertised transfer rate of the 128 and lower cards is 2 MB/Sec and the transfer rate for the 256 and 512 card is 10 MB/Sec. There is supposed to be a 1028 card in the works and I would guess it probably works at the higher transfer speed also. I have a ScanDisk 256 card and it seems to work just fine. Of coarse if you keep the stuff you use most on the main memory it will be faster.

I've had good lick with Ritek 256 meg. meritline has them for $ 78.
Has anybody tried a 512 card. They are pricey yet. I saw one of the sites selling the IQue, list the max memory as 288, 32 + 256. Anybody know for sure if a 512 will work ?

I'm still waiting for my iQue, but while deciding whether or not to buy, I called Garmin. I was told that 512 would work in the iQue. Since I wanted a record of this, I emailed them asking the same thing (I didn't mention that I had already gotten one answer). When Garmin answered, they again told me that 512 would work. Darrel Goheen over at TVNAV also reports that 512 will work. Like I said in the beginning... I'm still waiting :( :( :(

SD is SD, so in this case size doesn't matter. I use every size from 8 to 512 in several devices (cameras, PDAs, etc.) So, the iQue should not prove to be different. While some say ScanDisk seems to work for them fine, there has been several threads in various forums that really shoot down ScanDisk. I've read very few, if any, negative posts on any other manufacturer. Yet, on the other hand, I've read nothing but good things about Lexar and Panasonic. So, I would think, for your purposes, bigger is better, if you can afford it! This is especially if you are going to load a lot of programs, music files, maps, charts, etc. Good luck!

I use a 256MB SanDisk card - it is working flawlessly.
Gerhard
Ditto for me on the SanDisk SD cards. I have 32,64 and 256 MB SD cards and I have never had any issues with them. Currently using the 256 SD card in the iQue with about 200MB of map loaded... works fine.
Can't tell about speed as I have nothing to compare to, but I'm pretty satisfied with the performance so far.

I've had the opportunity to do some testing on various sizes and brands of SD cards. I'll be happy to share my results with you all.
First of all, I've heard several times from other sources that SanDisk is bad. Personally, I haven't had any reliability problems with any of my SanDisk cards.
It seems that in the world of SD there are only a few companies that actually manufacture SD cards, and then many other companies "rebrand" them as their own before selling them. The only two actual Underlying Brands (UBs) that I've seen are SanDisk and Panasonic. The way to tell what the UB is, is to pop it into a Palm unit that has the "Card Info" program. When you run this program, part of the info should tell you a company name. This is the UB.
If you buy a SanDisk or Panasonic card, I'm sure the UB will be SanDisk or Panasonic, respectively. If you buy another brand of card, the UB will most likely be either of these two, unless there's another major manufacturer of SD cards out there that I haven't seen, which is certainly possible. For example, I've seen "Palm", "Delkin", & even "Lexar" brand cards have a UB of SanDisk. However, I've also seen "Lexar" brand cards have a UB of Panasonic.
The tests that I've run include running a card benchmark utility called "VFSMark" and timing the reading or writing of a single large file (~100 MB) from/to the card. For the large file, I used a nice & fast USB2 card reader/writer on a USB2 enabled PC. This allowed me to see the big difference between slower and faster cards, because the bottleneck was the card and not the reader/writer. I tested 128 & 256 MB SD cards with a UB of SanDisk & 256 & 512 MB SD cards with a UB of Panasonic. Unfortunatelly, I wasn't able to test out a 128 or smaller Panasonic card to see how its 2 MB/s rating performed.
My tests showed that the Panasonic cards were definitively faster than the SanDisk cards. If memory serves, on the large file tranfer test, I believe the SanDisk cards wrote at about 1 MB/sec and read at about 1.5 MB/sec. The Panasonic cards wrote at 3.x MB/sec and read at 5.y MB/sec. (I can't remember the exact numbers on these 2).
The UB-Panasonic cards were both rated at 10 MB/sec & they both performed similarly. (Note: These advertised speed ratings are usually the highest theoretical speed that the card could reach, but you'll probably never see that full speed in real life.) The UB-SanDisk cards didn't have any advertised speed rating and both performed similarly to each other, as well. (sailing1 - I think that the 2 & 10 MB/sec rating is only advertised on the Panasonic cards. I don't think that it necessarilly applies to SanDisk, as is evidenced by my tests. BTW, the 1 GB cards from Panasonic are supposed to come out in about a year and are going to be rated at 20 MB/sec.)
I'm pretty sure that a large percentage of SD cards out there will be UB-SanDisk. They seem to be the big, general use card manufacturer that most people end up using. They're usually a bit cheaper to buy. Some people have complained about their quality, but I've had no real problems with them, except for the fact that they're slower than Panasonic. Most of the general public that has a SanDisk card probably wouldn't notice this speed difference, unless they compared the cards side-by-side, like I did.
Long story short: If you just want a card to hold your stuff, you'd probably be perfectly happy with a UB-SanDisk card, since it's a little cheaper. However, if you're a "power-user", the kind that has to get the premium octane for your car and your Palm, I'd recommend getting a Panasonic SD card (for your Palm, not your car).
Well, I hope this has been helpful.
CinderK
I have since found that Toshiba is another UB.

1GB SD I think suppose to come out this fall according to pcworld and I heard 2GB and up prototype SD n mini SD in the making (different magazines article I read) possible release date by nxt yr. So more likely a less than $100 512mb SD by the end of the year?? I wish....

btw does anyone know if MMC works and or tried it on Ique? Since MMC n SD cards are interchangeable I assumed it should also work on IQue.. thanx..
Garmin actually specifies it as an SD/MMC slot so it should work.

The MMC cards are not as thick as SD, so a device that was made for MMC cards will not accept an SD card, but they can go the other way: devices made for SD (like the iQue) can accept MMC.
The largest MMC cards are only 128MB and aren't any cheaper than SD. Unless you have some MMC cards laying around, just buy SD cards.

Thanks CinderK for your review of SD cards. If a card doesn't say what it's UB is, I guess the only way to find out is to put it in your card slot and see?
This was a very helpful review, just what I was looking for. Thank you again!
Thanks CinderK for your extensive review. I spent most of yesterday going through the boards to get info and think you have a great summary here. :)
I ended up ordering a 256MB Panasonic SD card from Amazon yesterday. It was going for $75. Not the cheapest price for 256 SD around but I avoid the Lexar (Panasonic/Sandisk) lottery and besides most of the places with cheap Lexar cards are out of stock anyway.

Just exchanged my Sandisk (256mg stick for a Lexar 256 (Labeled High Performance) and wow! What a difference in speed, loading detailed maps, finding address, doing search by location for stores etc. Huge difference. Even when I did a backup, I have 179mg of used storage, and the status bar just flew when I backup..

Toshiba may have both 10M/s and 2M/s tip. I don't know how to identify, though. From this thread, I suppose PNY uses 10M/s tip of Toshiba?

For european users that have acess to Media-Markt (stores), they sell Dane-Elec sd cards that show up as Toshiba when you check. I bought a 256 MB card for 111 Euros which is a fairly good price ein Europe. Can't say if is a fast or slow Toshiba. San-Disk sells at a slightly higher price.

Since this thread appears to have been bumped, I decided to put my two cents worth into this conversation...
1) I read somewhere that 256 MB and larger SimpleTech SD cards are Panasonic; and as yolk pointed out, Lexar cards can be either Sandisk or Panasonic...
2) For reference sake, my VFSMark w/ Sandisk 256 MB card is 187, based on the following:
File create: 94%
File delete: 42%
File write: 34%
File read: 295%
File seek: 380%

Curious as to how much higher the results would be with a Panasonic/iQue combo (this comment edited to clarify that I'm curious to see results with Panasonic/iQue combo, not necessarily Panasonic in any PDA) ...

For those wishing to run their own test, the VFSMark program is here (http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/vfsmark.shtml) The percentages are relative to a base system using the Palm M500 and a Palm 16Mb SD card.

Taking a cue from this forum, I cancelled my order for a 512 Panasonic SD card at $273 and ordered the same card from Outpost.com for $185. They had it in stock and it shipped out the same day. It's labeled RP-SDH512U1A and the packaging says, "Super High Speed: 10MB/s".
I ran the typical VFSMark tests but also ran some real-world tests: First the VFSMark results:
VFSMark Results
SanDisk256Mb
Test.............SanDisk 256.........Panasonic 512 (middle of 3 runs)
File Create:.........54%......................364%
File Delete:..........44%.....................262%
File Write:...........13%......................195%
File Read:..........305%......................672%
File Seek:...........393%.....................655%
DB Export:...........47%......................290%
DB Import:..........348%.....................652%
Record Access:....425%.....................754%
Resource Access:.376%....................662%
VFSMark:...............222......................50 0 (high = 515, low=499)
All this is nice but what does it mean in everyday use? I did the following tests:
1 - RepliGo download of files:
File Size------SanDisk 256-----Panasonic 512
1.67Mb-------11.69 sec----------9.84 sec
1.20Mb---------8.30 sec----------6.60
247Kb----------3.45 sec----------3.16 sec
2 - Screen redraw at 50 mile scale with screen detail set to the middle of the scale in preferences. I took the stylus and slid it from the bottom left to the upper right and timed the redraw. NYC was in the middle of the screen so there was lots of detail to reference. The 80 mile scale took less than a second with both cards (no minor roads at my preference setting).
SanDisk 256--------Panasonic 512
---9.3 sec--------------2.8 sec
3 - Route calculation. I put in a very complicated route from Poughkeepsie to Liberty Landing marina which involved routing through a dense urban area (to say the least).
SanDisk 256------------Panasonic 512
1 min 58sec -------------- 53 sec
Well, there's no doubt that the Panasonic card will improve the responsiveness of the iQue compared to the SanDisk card in actual use conditions. As for transferring the files from the SanDisk to the Panasonic card, I just used a card reader and copied the files to a folder for backup and then just wrote the files to the Panasonic card.

I bought a 256MB PNY at Staples Monday for $70. I thought it was a pretty good deal compared to other prices I'd seen, and the ScanDisk was $80. Also picked up a Cruzer so I could copy and transfer from my ScanDisk to the PNY (which shows up as a Toshiba on the Q). I thought that would give me a pretty good comparison for speed of route calculation, searches, etc. I honestly have not seen any difference between the two. It still takes a while to search all POI and calculate routes.
Also at Staples were these cool Zip pens. They attach to your index finger by an adjustable metal band (kind of like those adjustable rings you got as a kid). The pen has a plastic cap that I have been using as a stylus. There aren't any rough edges on the cap and it really works well. Just clip the pen to your finger with the cap on. Couldn't find a picture of it, but it is worth checking out if you have a Staples near you. It's easier to use while driving (admit it, you tap the screen while driving from time to time :) ) than a fingernail, which is what I did. For $2, I recommend you give it a try. Now I can clip my fingernail again. :D

Here is the trick: when you buy SD card, you just need to make sure the SD is designed for Palm which requires faster read then write. Some SD cards are for digitial camera, that requires faster write than read.
Hope this helps,

In response to Rick's Zip pen find, you can also purchase a fingertip stylus that is designed as a stylus, not a pen. That way you don't have to worry about accidentally inking up your screen! ;)

Okaaay, vipros, this is a first! How can you tell for what devices the SD is designed. I just received a Lexar 512 from Amazon.com. The packaging states, "High Performance - SD Card for Digital Cameras & Devices." Furthermore, there are pictures on the packaging of a camera, a PDA (looks like a palm), a device that looks like an MP3 player, and a DV camera. There's nothing on the SD itself that notes what it's for, and if it's like any other SD card, looking at the "Card Info" on a PDA will shead no additional information on this. The previous SD card I purchased from Amazon, a 256, is working fine in my T3. So, please, if you would, share some light on you statement. Thanks loads.

I'm not up to the gargantuan SD Card sizes some of you are; I'm happy (right now) with 64MB although considering 128 for my T3 Palm.
I purchased a 64MB SanDisk for my (now old) 505, and after 5 days neither the Palm nor my PC Card REader could recognize it, format, read it or blow it up.
I did not return it -- I just PURCHASED a Lexar.
Like the above listed user, and CinderK, I found the Lexar to be faster -- and easily defraggable with Norton SpeedDisk. It has not glitched once and is used daily, now about 5 months old.
My next (and all future) cards will be Lexar. Just my 2 cents.

VFSMark uses a Palm M500 PDA and a 16MB SD memory card as a base for all the numbers you see (therefore, the base for each number is 100%). The numbers reflect how much faster (or slower) things are when compared to a Palm M500. However, when used with different SD cards on the same device, you can see the relative difference in speed between different SD cards.
Unless the SanDIsk card you tested is one of those "Ultra" cards, I would think that the SanDisk figures you listed would be nearly half of the Lexar figures.
Hmmm... interesting...

There is no evidence that the Sandisk is an Ultra. I definitely didn't pay the Ultra price. All packaging and SD label indicates a standard SanDisk. I reran the Sandisk and got a 454 the second time. A third test is 453. 4th test 467.
If it makes any difference the Sandisk is nearly full. One map has 470MB

Thanks CC. This 3rd RMA is an older # but it has lasted 8 days. More than all the others combined.

The only thing senior about me is age. Not being a junior brings tears to my eyes.

Not knowing half of what you guys are talking about brings tears to MY EYES. I've used clocking anaylyzers for Palms but not SD Cards. Are those speed testers available? Freeware? I'd be curious about running some of my own on smaller cars (SanDisk32 v Lexar 64); all I know is I can't test the SanDisk 64 becuase it crapped out (see post above) and I snipped it into a million little chips due to private info being on there.
I appreciate VERY much all the testing stats though - I would say Lexar wins because of the file write speed difference - I don't think that half the size means it "should" be twice as fast - there is still a "main transition" and "handoff point" no matter how big the recipient is - common sense. I just like the Lexar a whole lot more, although if you use your nail to insert in slot (not necessary on T3, it's raised, the card will "split" along the crack. God Bless JB Wed. A smear of thta on the top (rivets would be bad!) and it's great.
Take care and thank you for input
