Somebody recently asked me to assist them in installing their S300 on an XP Professional machine. Over all, my experience was text book compared to the instructions found on Sony's support web site for installing the Clie Desktop Update 4.01. I also set the S300 HotSync connection settings to USB to PC with 9600 bps speed. (See my earlier posting on connecting the S300 on this.) However, the Sony web site failed to mention two important facts that you will run into.
These two issues is Administrative rights and Driver Signing. If you unfamiliar with the Win2k operating systems, XP Pro and Home are different animals than the Win 9x and Me operating systems. These actually have internal security which could be implemented in an office environement. XP Home and Pro out of the box configurations require a user account who is a "Computer Administrator" to install drivers. Typically, there is only one administrator called Administrator. If you have not created any others that's the only account that can perform this procedure. If you go into Control Panel and then to the "Users applet" you can punch around enough to determine if you are one. If you are attempting to connect your PDA in an office, most likely you are not an administrator.
Driver Signing is a feature Microsoft established to certify device drivers. If a driver was not digitally signed by Microsoft, it was not certified. Thus the operating system could be set to allow, warn, or block the installation of an unsigned driver. Now, what might the Sony PEG drivers are: signed or unsigned? Of course, their unsigned so XP may kick back a warning saying so. (This is the default setting.) You could choose to continue which allows you to install the device. In a work environment, those crafty administrators may choose to block unsigned drivers. If this is the case, you are dead in the water. You can check this setting out by opening the properties of "My Computer", selecting the Hardware tab and then clicking the "Driver Signing..." button.
Remember, if you are at home, these issues can be overcome. If you are at work, you will have to plead with the system administrators to get them to install it for you.
