After a false start I was able to load the map directory files to my harddrive. Then upon opening palm desktop and map install I arrived at this deadend. Here's the text of my e-mail to Garmin's wonderful Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm tech support.

The below error message stopped me cold. I am attempting to load maps on my new Ique 3600. It's looking strangely like these are beta versions. Are we getting paid for testing them?

The dialog box even told me to push the button to send it to the clipboard and even that did'nt work. Also could not highlight to cut and paste.

I have copied it longhand and hereby send it to you.

app: map install
at 8/9/2003 12:51:19 am (utc)
OS: windows XP service pack 1
processor: intel processor level 15 RAM 261120KB
MPL: map directory CPP 127-2.3

It took two tries of exchanging disks to the point where I though the maps were loaded to my harddrive. When I changed to mapsource disk 2, I was looking at two zip files which I did'nt bother with. The first try I successfully entered my unlock codes, then I was stopped and stumped.

On my second try I ran into the above dead end when I opened and clicked on map install in the palm desktop.

Separate and apart from the above problem, maybe you can explain why when I attempt to hotsync from the cradle (pushing the hotsync button), I get a not-syncing message but when I open hotsync in the applications menu then click on it it works OK.

I think you can imagine how frustrating this is.

Also, has anyone successfully run "Contacts 4" on the Ique. Can anyone suggest a nice replacement contact manager that does run on it.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

During installation of the Palm Desktop - at the end did it prompt you to put the City Select disk in or are you trying to load from disck one? During my installation the Palm Desktop software prompted for disk one of the City Nav disk and then it was pretty much normal. Just looking for clarification to see if I can provide any help.

Guy a few offices down from me got his IQue this week as well. He has a BMW motorcycle w/Streetpilot integrated and had previously loaded City Select for it (V4.0).

He did the IQue install (he also had a 505 palm that had been installed) and all went well. He went to install maps and got "Can't unlock maps" on the first hotsync w/maps. Garmin recommended reinstalling the map part. He did that and again all went well. When he tried to build a mapset, anything over about 16 meg in size would give him an error "Mapset too large...". They would load (he has a 128 SD) OKay. Garmin was baffled on this one.

He asked my help. First we uninstalled Mapsource and removed the directory, then reinstalled. Same results. I then uninstalled again, erased the directory and went into the registry and removed all keys related to Garmin and Mapsource. Then I uninstalled Palm desktop. Reinstalled everything and finally it all works.

I suspect it was a conflict with the previous installation of Mapsource. However my machines had Mapsource already installed as well (although V5.0) and had no problem. BTW both machines were W2K.

I can't be certain about that prompt for disk one. But if yours worked and mine did'nt..........wellll!

I did a system restore to yesterday (thursday) morning between my two install attempts. The one place i might have screwed up is by not shutting down some of the startup utilities though I did shut down the ones in the system tray.

Also I'm upgrading from a Sony Clie and before my second attempt I check in the add/remove programs list to see if any Clie programs were still hanging around.

Anyway, I'll give it another try in the morning and see what happens. Any help is greatly appreciated.

As tecman pointed out - when I went from Palm to Sony then back to Palm - had to clean the registry out and clean the hard drive of all Palm/Sony files and do a clean install. I even reported a bug to Norton - Windoctor would report an error with the Sony Registry every time and then I would say repair and gone was the MSImport.

You may have to do a full unistall - ouch but I think it to be a Sony software conflict and not a bad iQue.

Good luck.

Have I made a costly mistake by assuming that MAPSOURCE runs under Windows XP ?????

The supplemental instruction book list says it requires Windows 95/98/2000, ME or Windows NT 4.0. XP is not mentioned.

I'm running XP Pro and also have it running on 2000 Advanced Server with no issues.

I have mapsource 5.0 on my machine - can't say about earlier versions.
