I have just dug out my Psion Travel Modem and tried to connect it up to my Psion 5.
It worked last time I used it....
I've checked all the settings.....
I've rechecked all the settings.... :(
I've tested it with Comms.... :(
But I keep getting "Comms line failed"
Any ideas?
The little yellow light doesn't shine anymore - please tell me I just need new batteries and not a new modem!

... please tell me I just need new batteries ... OK - I think you need new batteries, Nick!! :p
Seriously, I hope that's all it is - if you just "dug it out" then it's highly likely, as they are battery-hungry beasts.

The little yellow light doesn't shine anymore The light - mine is a green LED - indicates that a mains adaptor is attached. It doesn't indicate any transfer of data.I've tested it with Comms.... ...but you haven't actually said what the result of that was.But I keep getting "Comms line failedThis usually indicates a wrong modem configuration. Have you changed the active configuration in CP/Modems to the "Travel Modem"? The default Travel Modem settings are actually for the older 14.4k serial model.

Well, with Comms I get
AT
OK
ATZ
OK
and after I try
ATDT(+Freeserve number) I get connected no problem.
If I hang up then try to connect via Web or email I get the "Comms link failed" message before the page has loaded.
I have checked the settings and everything is as suggested ( I had already done this through your excellent website :) ) but I don't have a
Type - fixed line option in the Handshaking section
Is this the problem? Would using a dialling program help?

Is this the problem?Sorry, I should have deleted that line from the settings - it is in the 5mx settings and relates to SMS messaging.
Try creating the filepath C:\Logs\Netdial\ and see if the Netdial.txt file, created after your next dialup attempt, gives any clues. It is a rather horrendous document with a lot of lines marked 'Skip' but look at the lines marked Tx: and Rx: to see if there are any obvious errors or if things come to a halt.

I have set up a netdial file but need help with the results. I will attempt to attach the file.

I have just connected with S5, serial Travel Modem and Freeserve and there is a difference in the Netdial.txt log files just after dialling. (You must have 'Wait for dialtone' disabled but that shouldn't matter.)
Yours:
21:48:35 Tx: ATDT08450796699.
21:48:35 Rx: ATDT08450796699.
21:48:58 Rx: .
21:48:58 Rx: .CONNECT..
21:48:58
Mine:
12.24.24 Tx: ATWDT08450796699
12.24.24 Rx: ATWDT08450796699
12.24.44 Rx: CARRIER 14400
12.24.45 Rx: PROTOCOL: LAP-M....COMPRESSION: V.42BIS....CONNECT 57600
In the settings I gave you earlier, leave the Init (reset) string as ATZ but if you entered AT&F in the Data string, delete that and try again.

Still no joy.
I'm baffled and beginning to wonder about the health of my serial port.
Any thoughts?

I'm baffled and beginning to wonder about the health of my serial port. There is no reason to suspect the serial port. A dialup from Comms works as does the dialup from whichever internet application you are using - Web or Email - but the connection with the latter is immediately failing.
I assume that you do have the latest version (v1.52) of Message Suite installed? If so, I would suggest you delete the configuration for the Travel Modem in CP/Modems, delete the configuration for Freeserve in CP/Internet, perform a 'soft' reset and enter the settings for both again. In the Modem settings, use only the ATZ reset string. It has been known for the file to be corrupt even though everything appears to be correct in the settings.

Hooray!
Success at last.
I did the soft rest etc but that did not work so I tried removing then reinstalling Message Suite and that seemed to do the trick.
Many thanks for all the advice!
