Ok, so here's my current setup:
(1) iBook 800MHz (w/USB ports) w/OS X
(2) Virtual PC installed with Windows 2k
(3) Garmin iQue
(4) USB/IRDA adapter
This plugs into your USB port and turns it into an infrafred port just like what's on the iQue.

This adapter lets you "beam" anything you want between the iQue and your PC, and you can even "hotsynch."

With this setup, you should be able to get through all of the initial installlation steps up to but not including the detailed maps install. Just make sure to indicate you want to transfer via "infrared" or "IR" on both the hotsync app on the PC and on the iQue, and don't even bother with the hotsync cradle at all.

Some important notes:
(1) Syncing will be SLOW! VEEERRY SLOW. You will probably want to plug in the iQue during synch because it will take hours the first time you do so.
(2) I've discovered that you can't sync maps to the SD card using this method -- something about the IR is not allowing it. (At the end the log reports an error 4004 or something like that. I tried on two different SD cards to make sure it wasn't the card)
(3) You CAN sync detailed maps to the internal memory using this method, but the amount of memory available is very constrained.
(4) To work around the issue (2), I am planning on loading maps (generated via map-install tool without actually "hotsynching" them) to the SD card using an external reader/writer. Someone told me in another thread that the SD card will have a "GARMIN" directory at the top level, and all that needs to be done is to place the map inside that directory. When I try this out I'll report back.

By the way, I got the USB to IR adapter from outpost. Right now you can even get it for FREE after rebate! :D Here's the link:

Good look to all and I hope this information helps others pursue our collective dream of being able to own both a Mac and an iQue without one being a paperweight. :)

That's great! Thanks for the news.

I am hoping the iogear/serial cable works as it should be faster than IR. I am getting all the pieces this weekend to try that, and I'll let ya know.

How do you tell the map source to generate the map file without hotsyncing and where does it put the file?

thanks,
Andy

Getting a map onto the ique is a two step process - first, you generate the map, and then, separately, you do a 'hotsync' to load the map to the ique.

the map files are placed inside your palm 'user' directory. There are two different places it could be, based on whether or not you want to sync to the internal memory or to the SD card.

For example, my paths are like this:
Palm/HafkenD/Install [internal memory]
Palm/HafkenD/CardInst/Slot-SD [SD Card]

So, you should be able to step 1 (generate the map) and then go to those directories and grab the map file without doing the hotsync.

This is indeed good news. Now, if you can indeed transfer a file to an SD card via a card reader/writer, that is even Greater news! Obviously I am waiting the results of that test. Let us know!

Great news hafken. Like to clarify that you are syncing via Virtual PC right and not native OSX ?

BTW, nscaler reported success with map transfer to the SD card via SD card reader ! :) http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=91850#post91850

Yes, I am syncing through VPC. I haven't actually tried doing anything through OS X native.

Great news regarding the card reader - that will be a key component to this solution, given the slow speed of the hotsync using IR. I've got one on order from amazon as we speak...can't wait to load more detailed maps!
