I uninstalled MapSource and now when I try to reinstall it, it
won't let me and I get a message that says "1628: Failed to
complete installation" and the install process aborts.

Any ideas ?

Just a few thoughts.

1. I assume you uninstalled using the Control Panel "Add/Remove Programs"

2. When reinstalling, make sure no other applications are running. And temporarily turn off virus protection programs.

Pretty basic but thought I'd comment

Yes to both 1 & 2. Looks like I'll be on the line to Garmin
Monday AM. I'm wondering if something is in the registry
now that keeps it from installing ?

Have you tried un-installing then reinstalling using the original Garmin CD? It gives you various options for repairing/removing/reinstalling the Mapsource program when you click on "software" on the install CD. I was having trouble with syncing large mapfiles, so I removed and reinstalled from the CD, everything worked fine after that.

Do you mean on the "original Garmin setup CD" ? If so I have
not tried anything on it as far as removing anything.

I called Garmin today and found out what my problem was. It seems that in the MapSource doc's I missed the part about installing no more than 4 regions, or install them all, in order for the program to work properly. I installed them all and now everything works just fine.
Great unit !

I had this same problem with only 4 regions. I got a 1603 when trying to reinstall. I had to reinstall because there was an error when installing, but it then worked. Later when I was trying to build the maps, there was a fatal error :0x80040707 (Dll function call crashed:ISRT._WaitOnDialog).

it get worse though. WHen I try to "repair" the app, I get an error -995 (The I/O operatoin has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request) . Also when I try to uninstall the app I get the same problem. so I am stuck. I am going to try to manually uninstall it now. Crossing fingers!

There was a card in my box that said to install all the regions inorder for it to work. I hope we are talking about the same thing :)

I have one region installed now -- if I want to install them all, do I need to uninstall, or can check off all of the regions when I add the other regions?
