Thank U all in advance...

I have an MC218 hich i can connect to the internet, having all the proper settings done (as i know), with my Siemens S25 via the infrared port...

The problem comes when i try to connect to the net via an external modem (particulary: a Crypto Best 56K serial modem K56Flex compatible)...
With the comms application i can send the simple reset commands to the modem, i can even connect to my ISP...
When i am trying to connect with internet's application interface i get an error message about the modem init strings when i use some simple init strings as ATZ etc.

**When i use the proper init strings for this "Crypto" modem (two i've tried wich works in their occasion, the one i got from a win98 driver's file -inf- and the other from a Suse Linux modem config file):
--with the Internet application i get a Program Closed error message for the Etel Server with reason code USER and number 23, after wich i have to make a soft reboot to stop the internet responding with an error Page Already Exists after every page request.
--with the application The Dialer the machine gets a soft reboot by itself when i press the Dial button.

As i already said everything works fine when i connect with the Siemens S25's build-in modem via the IR

I do not have tried to connect any other external modem as i only have the "Crypto" on my possition.

Here are the two init strings I use with the Crypto modem:
---From win98--- AT&FE0V1&D2&C1\V1S0=0W0
---From Suse Linux --- ATQ0V1E1S0=0&C1&D2 +FCLASS=0

WHEN IT COMES TO THE EXTERNAL "CRYPTO" MODEM I DO NOT HAVE A CLUE!!!

How have you connected the modem to the MC218? If you are using the "EPOC Connect" serial cable you must have a Null Modem Adapter between this and the modem.

You shouldn't require any sophisticated initialisation strings but do make sure that Carrier Detect (DCD) is not checked. Try:

------------------
Name - Ext PC Modem
Speed - 57600
Connect - Serial
Fax Class - Auto
------------------
Init (reset) - ATZ (or try AT&F)
Data - (blank)
Fax - (blank)
------------------
Flow - Hardware (RTS/CTS)
Terminal (DSR/DTR) [ ] not checked (also try with this checked)
Carrier (DCD) [ ] not checked
Type - Fixed line

Thank u for your imediate responce...;)

I have already tried the combinations you suggest me...

--- with the application The Dialer -- the program closes with reason code USER and number 23...

--- with the Internet application -- i get the following error msg:

Could not connect to Internet
Problem initialising modem
Modem settings may be incorrect
(See "Modems" In Control panel in System screen)

Create the file path C:\Logs\Etel\ and after your next connection attempt, have a look at the Etel.txt log file in the Etel folder which might give an indication of the problem.

Is the device a Fax Modem? Any external modem used with the 5mx or MC218 must be able to respond to the command AT+FCLASS=? It doesn't need to be a Fax Modem, but it must support this command without responding "ERROR". You can check this from Comms.

OK I have created the logs and the i got the following files...

It appears that the the modem isn't responding to the ATZ command. Does this work and the modem respond with OK if you send ATZ from Comms?
AT&FE0V1&D2&C1\V1S0=0W0 You certainly shouldn't need anything like that in the init string with the MC218. If ATZ gives error messages try changing it to only AT&F which is what I suggested you try in my previous message

METHEPAN

Yes from the comms application
the modem responds with OK for both ATZ and AT&F

if i give the strings
1)AT&FE0V1&D2&C1\V1S0=0W0
2)ATQ0V1E1S0=0&C1&D2+FCLASS=0
from the comms to the modem it responds with OK for both of them...

I keep talking for the last two strings (the first works as init string for win98 and the second for Suse Linux) cause when i give them to the MC218 both of them give me the same error as i already explained in previous posts:
Program Closed
Program Etel Server
Reason code USER
Reason number 23

When i give the simple commands ATZ and AT&F i don't get the previous error but i get another one complaining for problem initializing the modem...
The init strings (1 and 2) which defenetly initializes the modem on other platforms (Win98 and Suse Linux respectively) gives me on MC218 the Etel Server error.
I think that this means something cause the strings that defenetly initializes the modem on other platforms, on MC218 makes the Etel Server crush in comparison with the simple ATZ and AT&F strings which does not makes the Etel Server crush but neither initializes the modem as the Internet program complains with an error message: Problem initializing the modem...

SO REALY DON'T HAVE A CLUE (else than that i already mentioned)

Try deleting the settings for your external PC modem in "Control Panel > Modems", perform a soft reset and then enter the settings again which will sort any corruption in the file. Use either ATZ or AT&F, not the strings from the PC and make sure Connect via is set to Serial. See if that helps.

I have done that too...

I have tried all the combinations with a deletion of the modem file and a soft reboot for each...

I get the same message for problem initializing the modem...

Open "Control Panel / Internet" and delete your Internet Password from the settings.

Now send me a copy of your Commsdb.dat file from the C:\System\Data\ folder. If you go to my website and click the "Email Mike" button it will open a blank message in your PC Email program so you can attach the file.

I have just send you my commsdb.dat file...
Lets see now what is going on...

Once more thank you for your Knowledge sharing...

I copied the file into my Psion and ran a dialup (though it wasn't connected to the phone line). It initialised an external modem and dialled the number without any problem.

I can only assume that either there is something wrong with the wiring between MC218 and modem or some incompatibility problem with the modem, although this wouldn't explain why Comms works OK. The only other thing I can suggest trying is to change the port speed from 57600 and see if it will work at a different speed.

....unless anyone else can suggest a solution

Thank U for trying my friend...

Even if we didn't came into any solution, this conversation till now gave me a lot of clues and it sure has put a little stone in the building of my knowledge...

I hope eventually to solve this porblem and if this is done i will post the answer here...

Till then all suggestions to this post are welcomed...

Thank U all once more...
