Caveat emptor, but...
www.freewarepalm.com is my fave for freeware. You get pop-ups and a lot of garbage programs here, but you also get new stuff, good updates, and lots and lots of free stuff (a few demos, and a few expansion pack sorts of things for paid-for software, but mostly just plain old free stuff
