I searched everywhere & counld not find a difinative answer as to whether a IBM 1gig microdrive will work with the 3835 with a expansion pack plus. Anyone know? How's the speed of the drive?

I have used IBM 1 gig microdrives with an IPAQ 3835. I have used them in a dual PC card adaptor and in the PC card expansion pack plus. I put the drive in the PC card adaptor and put it in the expansion sleeve. They work fine. Not really sure about the speed. I use it for MP3s mainly and no complaints.

Thanks GadgetFreak - I'll be using the drive for MP3's as well. How far does the drive protrude beyond the slot opening on the expansion pack plus? I'm asking because I'm thinking of buying a flip cover and iff it protrudes too far, the cover may not work with the drive in.

Just a reminder, I am using a PC card expansion pack plus, not a CF card expansion pack. With the PC card expansion pack plus the back of the opening is a little lower than the front. With the microdrive in the supplied IBM PC card adapter the card extends about 1/8 to 1/4 inch above the back lip of the opening and is flush with the front of the opening. By the way, what kind of flip case are you considering? Do you know if it will work with an expansion pack plus? Thanks.

GadgetFreak, Thanks for the info. I am also using the pc card expansion pack plus - the cover I'm looking at is at http://www.vajacases.com/pda_eng.htm
I emailed them to see if it will work with the IBM microdrive installed. will let you know if I get a response

Thank you for the info. Let us know what they say. I would love a Vaja case but I didnt know they fit with the PC Card Expansion Pack Plus as opposed to the standard PC Card Expansion Pack. Im getting one if they fit.

Your right - they don't. Now I'm looking at the Piel Frama.

Hi, i work under the exact configuration you describe...iPaq 3835 with a 1GB IBM Microdrive in a CF Expansion Pack Plus. This configuration works totaly problem free. Perfectly i would say. As for the case i have had the same questions when i got my stuff. I figured that since i was going to use the plastic cover of the expansion pack plus anyway (i think it's very cool looking) i should get a flip top rugged case just to protect the protruding Microdrive from hits inside my suitcase. I bought the iPAQ expandable flip top rugged case and i am very happy ever since. The good thing about this case is that you can access the iPAQ very quickly (it's not too tight), and it can fit all types of expansion packs. It can carry your ipaq with the PC exp. sleeve together with an extra PCMCIA card (there is a slot for that inside the case). It surely works for me.
Oh well....Just a thought

And a good thought. Who makes that case? Thanks.

Oh sorry, forgot the speed thing. The speed is as usual. Fast enough to be happy for a whole GB of storage and slow enough to get on your nerves every time you open a program installed in it (that tiny sec of delay always gets to me). The whole deal is about getting the drive started (some miliseconds). After that it almost reaches CF speeds.
Hope i've helped

Oh sorry, you're right...it's an original COMPAQ case.

Here's a link for the Compaq iPAQ Expandable case (p/n 217883-B21):

Yes they are. I think that's why they are cheaper too (per MB).
