I've searched and searched. Does anyone else know if a manual for the Series 5 is avalable in PDF format for download.

There is a 5mx manual in .pdf format on Psion's website though I don't believe there is one for the original S5 'classic' - there isn't a lot of difference between the two manuals.

Talking of manuals, is there any form of technical manual for how to strip down and reassemble 5's, what all the bits do and what is likely to go wrong?
