Problem with SD card. Apparent Data loss

Please Help.

Was transferring files to 256Mb SD card from PC to card via USB Card-reader. When refreshed folder- found that all data on card had disappeared both when read via card reader as well as using the program filez on the palm itself. When looking at the freespace on the palm though, it is obvious that the data is still there taking up space. It is just that the PALM and my PC do not seem to be able to retrieve these files. Please help.

all of them on the SD card! Except the ones the palm puts on when formatting the card. Over the weekend I was able to salvage the data by using a program called photorescue 1.01 which cost me some cah but was worth it for the precious data. The files were clearly still there but not readable by the palm and windows XP without photorescue. Was there an easier and cheaper way to have recovered my data?
