For my Pocket PC I use mostly WMA files at 64k.

WMA - ripped at 96kbs, no digital rights, stored on a monster hard drive and copied onto SD for when I want to listen to it.
Add an autorun.inf with the following lines :
[autorun]
open=\windows\player.exe
and a "ignore_my_docs" file at the root of the drive. Turn on autorun in settings and when you plug in the card it starts media player - every time. sweeeeet !
