I wonder if there is any Netstumbler, Mini Stumbler, Airsnot or other alike software ever made (or perhaps will be) for Psion?

Unfortunately I don't think so... :(

The best you can do is a combination of NetStatRF and NetUtils. The author of NetUtils (Victor Kviat) is still actively developing his program - maybe you could persuade him to add extra functionality?

Best regards,
Martin

I hope you could because you have a BIG name in this industry ;)

BTW, how do I choose/access a particular broadband service provider from among a few of them at an area (i.e. Starbuck) because NetStatRf does not show all of them?

Unfortunately IIRC, he's not got a nB/S7 - so he won't be using WiFi... :( I'll have a chat with him though and see what he says...

I vaguely recall that you can't choose from a list of WiFi SP's - rather you need to manually specify the correct connect details in order to choose a specific one. But then of course you need to have those details in the 1st place...

Diem is really the expert on this stuff though...

I'm not sure a NetStumbler or AirSnort would be possible with a netBook as the ethernet driver would have to be put into "promiscuous mode" to capture all the packets. I don't think this is available.

Correct with the WiFi setups : you need to know all the info before you set up the network connection in control panel... I assume you can ask at Starbucks or wherever and they will give you the info (Q: is this chargeable, and do they change the setups ever?)

John

More's the point, will the people at Starbucks have the 1st clue of an idea what you're talking about...?

Thanks for your replies guys.

Well, one of our major ISP still provides free service until the end of this year.

I tried this at the Starbucks in Birmingham UK. The staff had no clue beyond pointing me at the leaflet dispenser. Their provider is TMobile, and the system was free when I tried it (several months ago) and I know they were planning to charge eventually, if there was enough interest. Not sure if this has yet come to pass though, so the free trial may still be going.

Their system is extremely simple and is based on MAC address filtering. You connect initally using the SSID 't-mobile', and the network responds by pushing you a registration page if it does not recognise your MAC address. Once you've registered, you're in every time - no WEP is used BTW.

I had great fun with it - I found that the range was adequate to allow me to sit outside the place and still get a 5MB connection. I never saw a single other user though (then again they may have been inside actually spending money on overpriced coffee :p)

I tried it last week at Starbucks in Leeds, without success. Not sure whether my card is suitable - it's a Cisco Aironet 340.

Definitely suitable. I have been using the same card as yours before I sold it off due to its battery consumption, and got a Orinocco Silver (reflashed to firmware v8.72 - 128bit WEP).

Thanks, psifonso, at least now I know I'm not wasting my time in the attempt to connect. I'll do my homework better before the next trip to that coffee shop!
