Diem you mentioned some where else that you used Tiscali ISP. what is their dial up prefix ie 0845 etc. and do they support POP3 (think thats the thing) so i can access just email using the Psion mail program . Hotmail wont do this and is slow and expensive logging on through the 'opera' option. Also some numbers are cheaper than others to access via a 'pay-as'you-go' phone!!
Also with current email option cant access through my bt all in package like the hotmail one so cost pounds a month would all be cheaper on one package!! ;)
sorry mate - it wasn't me. I use a blueyonder dialup (when forced to!).
Also with current email option cant access through my bt all in package like the hotmail one so cost pounds a month would all be cheaper on one package!!
Sorry - I don't understand what you're saying here

Sorry (revision brain drain) what i meant was. Used to access use my BT all-in package to connect to my tesco-mail and from home with psion was cheaper as i payed all in for access. tesco now like hotmail dont allow this so have to connect seperatly for mail using local phone rates. When connecting to net via mobile the cost of the call is reflected by whether the number is 0845 or 0808 etc some are cheap others not depending on network, some dont even let you accept at high cost! Was looking for alternatives that I can use. phew! :D

Firstly, Tiscali's number is 08457 002299
Used to access use my BT all-in package to connect to my tesco-mail and from home with psion was cheaper as i payed all in for accessOK, at home you have an inclusive package which let you collect mail from Tesconet. Are you saying that this is no longer possible and that you must use a Tesco dial up to retrieve your mail? If so, using Tiscali isn't going to help.
When connecting to net via mobile the cost of the call is reflected by whether the number is 0845 or 0808 etc some are cheap others not depending on networkNo ISP is going to let you connect with a 'free' number such as 0808 while using a mobile phone as the cost to them would be prohibitive. The exception might be where there is a special deal with the phone network provider. Normally, packages which include 'free' calls require a BT phone line and the reason for this is that the other phone companies have declined to carry the 'free' calls whereas BT have been forced by OFTEL to handle this traffic which they also don't want.

Yes thats what I meant. I think many companies are changing the services they offer in this way. I did not realise that the 0808 were a free phone number! The 0845 ones are still reasonable on orange and many ISP's have these types of 'prefixes' but cant usually be included in the 'inclusive' packages. reakon they want us all to have the newer phones and sigh up to 'GPRS' packages and all that. Will have to develop a fast log-on approach or find a ISP that has a 'normal' number???

Have had a look at there website and it appears that the '24 severn unmetered' access from home uses a 0808 number ( need bt line) and you can have a back-up number to call which is a 0845 number? Pay as you go did not have any number listed so not sure what it was probably a 0845 number. Thanks for all your help anyway as always Nigel

You may care to take a look at PlusNet - it's working well for me as an all-in-one solution.
http://www.plusnet.co.uk
They have a selection of unmetered access packages, and one big plus is that you can nominate up to 5 BT landline numbers to dial into it from - most allow only one.
Their 0845 number gives me access to POP3 e-mail anywhere - I was also able to send out from Europe which I couldn't with my old Freeserve account.
They give you a webmail account as well on the same user name, which can access any POP3 mail boxes you have.
You can e-mail me via the link in my PDA Street profile if you want any more info.

I use both Blueyonder (dial-up and broadband) and Tiscali/Lineone. The Blueyonder is a local London number and they have other PoPs too. The ineone number is an 0845 number. They both allow pickup from mailboxes on the other, but you can only send when connected to the right ISP.

Have searched the internet and all the 'free' ISP's and others seem to use 0845 numbers. This and advertising seems to be the way they make money! Need to search for a mobile phone that allows access to these numbers as part of there inclusive minutes or very very cheaply, any ideas?

Need to search for a mobile phone that allows access to these numbers as part of there inclusive minutes or very very cheaply, any ideas? This is why I posted a normal STD number for Virgin Net. This is not a "non-Geographical" 0845 number and should be allowable against inclusive minutes.

I think I misunderstood at least part of the question. My cellphone contract with o2 allows access to my 0845 PlusNet dial-up within the monthly minutes included. Until I went on to GPRS that was the main reason for having a deal with a substantial amount of inclusive time.

I contacted Virgin customer services and that number was there old international dial up number that has changed the lady siad the new one was '0870 2780 100 (Calls to this number will be charged at the International rate determined by the country you are dialing from)'. Just thought I would post if any one travels and would find this useful.

This is an STD number which works (I tried it a day or two ago) and obviously Virgin don't want people to know about a number they can use as an alternative to the official 0845 (or 0870) numbers where they get a percentage of call costs. If you tell them you know about it, they will probably take steps to disable it!

Can't remember when or where but there was a whole conversation on this phone number thing when Vodahone and others removed 0845 numbers from their inclusive minutes. I use Claranet and they were very forth coming with their direct number 02079055151 and others when I asked if there were alterantives to the 0845 (like mike says it surprised me as they don't get any revenue from it. maybe i is because I have a pay monthly account with them for my freetime package though). Claranet works well for me with my mobile and netbook and also I use their unmetered package on my landline which has the bonus of being able to nominate any other landline if I give 12 hours notice and then when I return home I can revert back to previous desgignated number - they only allow one designated landline number at a time.

I use Claranet and they were very forth coming with their direct number 02079055151 and others when I asked if there were alterantives to the 0845 Claranet is also my ISP but all of their accounts are "paid for" so they couldn't really refuse to give out the STD number. Actually, their access numbers are listed at http://www.uk.clara.net/support/vpops.phtml including the London numbers and, if you enter your STD code, they will tell you a local dial up number as well (for those not in London) :)

I thought there was a free section of clara net, can't remember what it was called though. Claranet host the FreeUK service. I originally thought it was their "free" ISP, but a posting in one of the Claranet newsgroups made me think that perhaps they are actually hosting the service for FreeUK.

Mike I did not actually reveal I had access to a non-0845 number, I only asked if they had a alternative they could give me. They were then quite happy to tell me the number-same as the one you posted! They said it was an international number etc. that was (due to be changed to another) so people could access accounts from abroad at international costs.

Mike I did not actually reveal I had access to a non-0845 number OK, sorry, I assumed (wrongly) that you had revealed that there were people aware that they could bypass the 0845 numbers. Anyway, still useful to have the 0870 number which may qualify for inclusive minutes with some packages :)
