My 505 has stopped HotSyncing. I have exchangd the cradle as a precaution...still nothing happens. I have uninstaled the desktop,performed all three types of resets...unfortunately no luck. This unit has been an absolute dream for 15 months with no problems until this.
Anyone have any ideas?

Most likely this your problem is SUDS. Sudden USB Death Syndrome. No one, not even Palm, knows exactly what causes this. Try a serial cradle and see if it works. If you have some sort of extended warranty plan, go and exchange the unit. Look on the Palm KB to see if there are any FAQ's for this problem. If you can possibly upgrade your OS to version 4.1, this may also clear up the problem. See my post about "Upgrade to PalmOS 4.1 the "easy" way" for instructions.
