Hi,
I just got a 3c (thanks Ivan) but the eMail software from Psion has a Micro$oft installation routine - and I can only use a Mac!
All the files seem to be there but there is no indication where they belong, not even a text file. I may not be able to get to a Microsoft machine for months (I'm disabled, albeit temporarily).
I don't want to use the web browser (I have got space for it though) but the eMail application may be just what I want. I know about eMail-It but I'd rather save my pennies as sick benefit don't go far.

All the files seem to be there but there is no indication where they belong, not even a text file There is, you know :)
There are three .CTL (Control Files) which are plain text and show the paths into which the other files must go.
Internet.ctl Full installation requiring 550k of memory.
Int512.ctl Installation without the Internet Tools to allow it to fit on a 512k SSD.
Tools.ctl To install the Internet Tools separately.
I originally installed PsiMail Internet manually in a 3a from the floppy disk with a 'Cyclone' drive. It is that same original installation, transferred by SSD, which is still working in my 3c. I've never installed it from a PC.
What I actually did was to make a copy of the floppy and then moved the files from the copy to the Psion. Otherwise it could be a bit confusing. There is only one file which must go in the internal drive, the others can be placed in an SSD.

Thanks Mike,
I didn't realise the .ctl files were relevant (or text). I've never installed anything to any 3 series other than manually so the intricacies of this kind of installation were/are new to me.
I'll install to my RAM disk and then isolate the eMail bits (shouldn't be hard and WEB.APP is a dead giveaway) and copy them to the Flash disk.
At a guess, I imagine it's MAILINT.INI that should be on the internal drive.
But boy oh boy, that was a quick response!

At a guess, I imagine it's MAILINT.INI that should be on the internal drive No, it is Dial.cfg which goes in the path M:\WDR\DIAL.CFG
You will see in the .CTL file that it is the only file with the drive specified.

Hi Mike,
When I posted I was just trying to match your swiftness - no hope :D !
I did read the .ctl file properly but I had just a cursory glance before posting my thanks. Now I've just got to get it all working with my ISP (Tiscali).
I might have to buy eMail-It though since PsiMail is very big for a SIBO application. I suppose this is because it has a web browser (which I neither need nor want) as an integral part.

Hello Phill,
Great you got it working. Can you discribe how you did it. I'm trying also to hook on my tiscali mail her in Belgium
Btw: here you can find email-it for free: http://www.psion-user-club.at/d_mail.html

Hi Ivan,
"Great you got it working." Not yet. I figured out how to install it (with Mike's help) and got the program working but the actual connection, not yet. Of course the 3c is much better than the 3a except the built-in calculator, but as I use Calc3a anyway it doesn't matter.
"Can you discribe how you did it." I just installed everything according to the .ctl file and bingo. But the modem's call wasn't answered so somewhere a setting (or more) is wrong  . I suspect eMail-It will be easier to set up (and smaller).
"Btw: here you can find email-it for free: http://www.psion-user-club.at/d_mail.html [/B][/QUOTE]." Actually eMail-It itself is free but the TCP/IP stack is shareware. The whole program has been recently updated too. I'm not sure of the URL though. When I got it I Googled for it.
Incidentally, Philip is usually spelt with one 'l' and in my case Phil is also spelt with one 'l' :D .

Phil,But the modem's call wasn't answered so somewhere a setting (or more) is wrong I used to have a "PsionNet" account (part of Lineone which became Tiscali) and I'm not sure that I ever got it working. It isn't among the list of configurations in my, 3c which suggests it didn't work.
I know that Freeserve does work and there is a .prv file on my "Series 3" page to set that up automatically. I suspect eMail-It will be easier to set up (and smaller)Smaller - yes
Easier - ? I only ever use it for testing and support purposes, so I'm not using it very often but I, personally, don't find it very intuitive. I'm not sure of the URL thoughThe latest version of "eMail-It" is also on my Series 3 web page.

Hi Phil (with one L ;) )
This is what I always get: modem's call wasn't answered. I think this has something to do with the login script.
As a UK'er you can switch to a different account. I think the accounts Mike worked out will work fine.
Any idea they will work in Belgium? Great site b.t.w.
This (http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~jochens/pmifaq.htm) is a link I found on the net. Maybe it can be of any use.

Hi Mike,
For complex personal reasons I would much prefer to use my Tiscali account so I guess PsiMail must go and eMail-It must come. I'll try it. I take it the (PsiMail) free accounts won't work over my Tiscali (unlimited - i.e. 150 hours) connection.
If eMail-It is too complicated I'll just have to ditch the idea of using my 3c for eMail :( . Certainly PsiMail is rather too big for my purposes. I do have a 4MB Flash card and a 1MB RAM card and I hope to duplicate that some time but, economic though SIBO software is, I don't yet have a proper backup regime (don't ask why, just take my word for it, it's not possible yet) and until I do I daren't use much space for essential programs. It may well be another year before I can backup properly.
I can cope with a non-intuitive program, though, but why was eMail-It written so? Most SIBO software I've seen (and I've seen a lot) is very easy to use. I've actually demonstrated that by letting an IT virgin loose on my old 3a - it took her about 5 minutes to be fairly competent and 10 to be pretty good.

Phil,
For complex personal reasons I would much prefer to use my Tiscali account so I guess PsiMail must go and eMail-It must come. I have managed to find my "PsionNet" Username and Password - amazingly, after a break of probably a couple of years, I was still able to connect to Tiscali (using a PC). I will have a play about with PsiMail Internet and see what happens. What you haven't mentioned is the modem you are using!
I take it the (PsiMail) free accounts won't work over my Tiscali (unlimited - i.e. 150 hours) connectionIf Tiscali does work with PsiMail Internet, there is no reason why you shouldn't use your 'unlimited' package though presumably you have to dial from the phoneline registered with them.
Certainly PsiMail is rather too big for my purposesThe 'Link' posted in Suomiman's message goes to Jochen Siegenthaler's page for PsiMail Internet. Jochen has created alternative .CTL files so you can install only the parts of PMI that you want to use.
I can cope with a non-intuitive program, though, but why was eMail-It written so?This is a very subjective opinion. As I said, I use the program extremely rarely and when I do, I have to think my way through the program again to be able to do what I want. For someone who uses it on a regular basis, it would become second nature and there would almost certainly be no problem with it.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for all that. You really didn't have to do it all but I hope you enjoyed it. I would have if I understood comms as well as you do (and sometime I may). I'll definitely try what you suggest - and I hope to tell you it all worked.
I have a Psion Travel Modem (the one like a small Psion) but I can use a 3com USR 56K FaxModem if need be. I also have a 3Fax (like a small Psion too) I was given for my 3a (I mostly use the 3c now, the 3a is a very sophisticated alarm clock - and I never use the 3a for comms). I don't actually need to use anything other than my home landline at the moment - I'm only really sufficiently mobile to go to Sainsbury's :D yet.
Your help has been invaluable so far. I hope I'll not need to bother you further!

Hi again folks,
Thanks again, Mike. Everything works properly now.
The only (and obvious) change I had to make was to substitute my own Tiscali settings. All is now hunky-dory!
The .ctl files miss at least one file necessary for Setup to work and it's rather annoying to have to use Setup to connect first so I might still buy eMail-It but all Mike's advice was spot-on.
I'm much happier. So I'll just watch the Grand Prix now with a couple of glasses of wine. And I'll hope Coulthard wins (the McLaren works is only a few miles away, near Woking, and my father was born in Indianapolis - but actually I just like Formula 1 motor racing).
