I was mugged a few days ago, and I've just found out that my insurance won't cover me. My 5mx was stolen, but I had backed it up onto my PC about a month before. (Haven't been able to get synchronisation to work since I left my last job last year).

I can't afford another psion just now, and desperately need to get at the information which must be in the 'backup' folder on my PC. Does anyone know if/how I can access that info without going via a Psion? Any advice would be really appreciated.

Sorry to hear of the mugging, I had my Series 7 stolen while on a train, though my insurance covered it. It is possible to get a new 5mx at a cheap price, though I don't know where - someone on this forum should be able to provide links to a cheap 5mx.

There are ways, though it depends on what information you want to get at.

There was an emulator for ER5 produced, but I have not had any success in finding an unbroken link to it. Though I my self have a copy on CD - as it is freeware I guess that I could copy the CD!

You would need to map one of the emulated Psion drives to your backup folder and off you go!

If you e-mail me off line we can discuss this further.

You can convert some files by opening the 'My Psion' on computer desk top, goto psion and open 'convert files'.

The cheapest price that I have seen for a 5mx that has reasonable shipping availability is http://www.expansys.co.uk/ or http://www.exapnsys.com/ if you are in North America.

The EPOC emulator is downloadable from http://www.symbian.com/ somewhere but you have to sign up for the development network. I'll poke around and post back if I can find it. But essentially you can map a drive letter to the location of your backup files and actually have the emulator access the files as if they were on a Psion 5mx. I've tested it before (for the very reason that you listed - in case mine is broken, lost or stolen and I need to access my passwords database) and it worked fine.

I have been moving files to the "C" folder as I couldn't see a way to have additional drives in the emulator.

yet another subject I've yet to put in my FAQ

The emulator is available from www.psionteklogix.com, by joining the (free) Partner Program. You'll find it in the netPad section, under software downloads (note ~20MB download!)

The emulator only works when installed in the 'root' directory of a hard drive. Fortunately, you can fool a PC into thinking that a subfolder is a whole new drive using the DOS 'subst' command.

I'll shortly have the whole procedure on my site (including how to read your backups within the emulator). In the meantime, you can use the 'Convert Files' option off the Psiwin menu in Start..Programs.. to convert most files in your backup to a PC-readable format (excluding Agenda and Contacts).

As diem noted, with DOS based Win kernels (Win95, Win98, WinME) you can use the subst DOS command to map a drive letter to a DOS path.

With NT based kernels (NT 4.0, Win2000, WinXP) you can create a share to the subdirectory (folder) and then map a drive letter to it. I think that it's a bit less kludgy.

.....now if I only had the vaguest idea of what that was actually about, I'm sure it would be really useful. I think I'll just stick to transferring files I want to open to the "C" folder so they appear in the internal drive. ;) Anything else is way over my head.

Regarding the emulator, if the download is too large for your connection, phone the number below and they'll send you it on CD for GBP10.00.

Bleagh ... If I'd known that a few weeks ago I would have saved myself hours ... It's not a fast download over a 56k modem connection!

Great article Diem, many thanks.

right, job's done. Goto my FAQ at the URL below and you'll find a complete guide for setting up the emulator. Following up my previous post, where I indicated an inability to follow all the DOS procedures you outlined (due of course to my ignorance in matters of DOS!), I have now seen a post in the EPOC digest from which it seems all I need to do to create new drives is to insert a single line in the .INI file for each new drive. It works.

In C:\epoc32\Data\Epoc.ini I add the lines

_epoc_drive_d C:\epoc32\wins\d
_epoc_drive_e C:\epoc32\wins\e
_epoc_drive_f C:\epoc32\wins\f
_epoc_drive_g C:\epoc32\wins\g

create the folders D, E, F and G in the path specified and I have my new drives. Similarly, the path can point to my Psion's Backup folder. Magic - that's it! :) :)
