I am thinking of purchasing a Dell Axim Pocket PC. It seems like a great value for money PDA. However, I have two questions for the experts here:

a) Are there any problems with the Dell Axim I should be aware of (i.e. is it a good product)? and

b) Can you sync a Pocket PC with more than one machine i.e. sync at home and at work?

Cheers

I think that it is an excellent product. Some people have problems with SD memory cards - I am one who had had two random formats - so now I don;t carry anything critical on SD, just music files, and carry any important files on CF cards, if I need to carry them on external media.

You can synchronize with up to two machines, but no more than that without deleting one of the partners. The other thing is that you can synchronize e-mail with only one of the partners, and that must be the first one that you set up.

The Dell is a great deal, I've had three different
Sansdisk cards and all worked great W/O problems.

1. Some people complain about the "form factor",
but I like it. The rubber sides are slighty sticky
and the device stays in the hands. Other PPC's
seem slippery to me even though they are smaller.

2. Screen's good inside, but you have it in direct
sunlight outside. If you are in shadow or bright
indirect light, the screen washes out and you can't see it.

3. Get a good Backup program, because the one
supplied with the Dells is unreliable.
I like Pocket Backup Plus from spritesoftware.com
It's reasonable in cost and it works every time!
If you Backup often, (You should you know!) you
can survive a Hard Reset without breaking a sweat.

4. ActiveSync on two computers can be a real
pain. I finally quit sync'ing at work and e-mail
the documents home and then save them
to the Dell. Awkward but it works. I've posted
before the ActiveSync was written by a Warlock
on meth, perhaps a person with a nasty sense
of humor. The program will work great for a week then
go 'bonkers' and not reconize your Dell.
Grrr,,,

Not to worry, from reading the other Forum's
most everybody has ActiveSync problems.

5. There's a good size chunk of memory
in the ROM that you can use and not
lose in a Hard Reset. I usually backup my
PIM files here.

6. All in all a great buy and a good machine.
If they would only fix ActiveSync.

sigh,,,

7. Get a memory card backup often and
get a card reader and backup to the Desktop
often. It sounds like a pain, but after a few
times it's a piece of cake and give you a
lot of comfort.
