Modem Connection Setting Problems

I recently aquired a Targus model for my Axim. The modem seems to function OK. When I make the connection settings for AT&T Worldnet I have to enter User: and Password: Everytime I enter my password it changes. I thought it was happening during dial up, now I discover it changes as soon as I change screens in the modem connetion setting. What have I overlooked or doing wrong.
