1. Get 'Disable Buttons', a program that keeps the PDA fom turning on just because of accidental button presses. The 71's joystick will turn the PDA on in almost any case if you are not careful. (www.freewarepalm.com, etc.)

2. The 71's hard case is new enough that everyone is selling it for about the same price. Innopocket, Proporta and Rhinoskin seem to all be the same case. The metal is rather thin but tough enough for most situations. It IS NOT helpful against water, sand, 'big' crushes, etc.

3. For a tougher case, try the Smarter Case (www.smartercase.com)- it gets good reviews, but I am not sure how well the Zire fits it (they are generic, Velcro-using cases. The steel shell is fabric covered, including camo!) Other tough cases include www.grindergear.com (I LOVE their stuff- mostly pouch-style stuff but incredibly tough!) and www.proporta.com's Neoprene cases. These are somewhat impact resistive, decently sand and water resistant, and still slim enough for BDU pockets.

4. The ultimate protective case is the www.armorbyotter.com Armor and Extreme Armor cases by Otterbox. Aain, these are generic cases that will not fit the Zire perfectly, but they are TOUGH and sand/water PROOF (not just resistant).

I suggest you visit the thread Zire 71 Cases Reviews. You will get a variety of opinions on different cases, and what their users think of them. I use a metal case that is sold under a variety of names.
