Anything new from Palm is News even tho the Zire is too basic and has way tooooo little RAM for me :) (eyeing Tungsten or NX70V)
Tho it is good for Palm to be targeting PDA newbies and start to get them hooked (and upgrade to a higher-end model). ;)

I concur. Although extremely slim and OS 4.1, it's just not for me. I'm already hooked, and will upgrade when OS 6 gets released summer/fall of next year. Just wait till you see what'll be in those handhelds! BTW, I like your sig Schmuck! It's true too!

there is NO WAY that I would buy a Zire. $99 is SUCH a rip-off!!! I got my IIIc off of eBay for $70, and that was without looking around much!!! and what's with the lack of buttons? wouldn't that cause conflicts with some games that use all of the hardware buttons? it's not much better than the m100, except for the OS, and that really doesn't make much difference. if you want something just for keeping appointments, get an m100 from eBay for $40. if you want to use it for other programs, you need at least 8 mb.

My wife wants a Zire. She is not a button and whistle user. She currently has a Palm V that is pretty worn out and has never used more then 2 meg of memory. She thinks the Zire is "cute". When she looks something up on my m515 she gets flustered and tells me I have to much junk on it.
There is a market for the Zire, a huge market I think. Not everyone is a PDA power user or a PDA Geek. Many people will buy it over the dated IIIc as long as they think it is "cute".
I myself want a Tungsten. A year ago I switched to an Ipaq which was a huge mistake. I wanted to go back to a Palm device and decided to wait until the new Palm came out. The Zire is not what I want. It is not the workhorse I am looking for. Right now I use a m505 that I got dirt cheep. It has been great. I now await the Tungsten.

My suggestion would be to get an m100 off of eBay instead of getting a Zire. with a little looking, you could probably get one for as little as $30-40. I can't change your mind about them looking cute, but if cuteness is what you're looking for, I would suggest an m1xx. I agree that the Zire has a large potential audience, but I think that most smart buyers would look into a used m100 instead. As to wanting a Zire over a IIIc, I think that that's a little ridiculous. IIIc's are faster, have more memory, and obviously are color. I recently upgraded mine to OS 4.1, and have hardly noticed any difference except for better graffiti recognition.

Well, there are various people out there with various needs. Some people prefer the faster more flexible units, with speed memory and built in cameras(like me), but some people prefer the simple pdas, and could care less about add-on apps and speed. In fact, there are people who have trouble enough just getting their charger plugger in the right way.
There are even some poor wretches that prefer ppc, pity the fools. They have no clue...:D
When it first came out, the zire looked like a piece of junk to me, but it is not marketed towards people like me, it is for those who want a "cute" pda(thankyou exit).
I think that the zire is an excellent move for palm, the only problem I might see is the buttons, little-man is right, that would get on anyones nerves. Then again, if you use little in the way of add-on apps, bingo, no-problemo, fugettaboudit.
Joy to the world, the zire has come, throw down, that pocket, pc!!!

I'm sorry folks, the zire just doesn't do it for me. greyscale, 2Mb ram and 4.1, it's just not that great. besides, what's up with the buttons? if i need a phone book, my cell phone already does that. need a shopping list, i have pen and paper. speed? my iiic is plenty fast and it's in color.
years ago i saw the m100 hanging in a local target for $99. the zire, while new, seems to be almost the same thing in a new package. go for the tungsten.:)

My wife got her Zire. It is actually pretty cool. The mono screen is better then I have seen on some of the past Palms. It is pretty crisp. It has a handy feel. I pointed out to her about the missing buttons and she said "Big Deal". I offered her my Ipaq in trade and she turned me down. I wasn't really serious, I depend on my Ipaq to keep papers from blowing off my desk. The Zire is too light and small for that. I also told her that I was going to wait for the Tungsten she said "Yea, whatever". A real wizenheimer at times, this one is.
I love having a computer in my pocket. My m505 has served me well, but hurry up Tungsten. I wan't you.

The Zire is perfect for its targeted consumers--newbies! The m100 is old, and looks like a pile of junk. Even if housewife has no knowledge of computers whatsoever, she is able to use the Zire quickly and efficiently (hope so anyway). The Zire, in my opinion, was not designed to be coveted by the seasoned user. Palm's goal is to attract a newer market. With an affordable, slim, and "cute" product, they are going to do that. Buy it for your wife (or kid) and see what happens.

I've come to know a guy who bought the Zire for his 6 year old. I'm still waiting for his reply as to what the kid does with it.
