3rd party launcher...

Has anyone found a 3rd party launcher (MegaLauncher, Launcher X, etc...) that works well with the T3?

I have both launchers above and neither supports the 320x480 screen.

Guess this is part of the growing pains of purchasing a new handheld on the release date.

Launcher X has a beta that supports the 320x480 on the Garmin iQue 3600 which is the same virtual graffiti API as the new T3.

I sent an e-mail to ZZTechs about when ZLauncher will support the T3. Hope they get back to me soon. We shouldn't have to wait long. Look how fast they had support for the UX.

Yay! Now all I need is for Wordsmith and ShadowPlan to support landscape mode (Wordsmith already does on the Tapwave Zodiac, allegedly) and I'm happy!

Don't use "Launch Em'" 3.9 or earlier. I had been using it on several Palm PDAs up through the T|T and was wonderfully satisfied, even after evaluating a couple others, including Launcher X. However, when I completed a hot sync to my T3, the T3 locked up, and kept locking up after hard resets. After a little trial and error, I narrowed it to Launch Em'.

I emailed Installigent (Launch Em' developer). Here's my email to them and their reply.

I installed 3.07 on my Tungsten 3 and it works great. :D

For all the ZLauncher fans I'm glad to say v3.62B works in full screen. It was made for the Garmin but works on the T3. Good thing Garmin and Tapwave use the Palm 320x480 API.

I have to admit that, having used SilverScreen on my TT, I'm now a convert to ZLauncher for my T3. Partly because it has some cool KDE themes :) but mostly because all the icons stay where I put them (like Documents To Go, which SS put back in Unfiled every time I synced!). It's still a little bit flaky - backgrounds don't seem to work, and some of the top bar disappears ocassionally after I close an app or the slider - but it's otherwise OK.

Are you referring to the above problems your having on your T3 with ZLauncher? I've had none. To use a background on a Palm with ZLauncher be sure to use the provided JpegLib prc. Sync it over with ZLauncher. They added it to v3.61 and above.

S'OK, I found the problem - the image I was trying to convert was on my Palm as well as on the SD card, so the conversion app was getting confused! All fixed now...

www.palmgear.com and www.handango.com are two good places I know of for themes. The Silver XP theme looks great on the T3.

Windoze XP themes - eeww! :) This Linux user says the KDE Crystal theme rocks! More penguins than you know what to do with...

How in the name of God to you select an image for Background on ZLauncher???

Do they have to be BMP files in the extension card?

Please please help as their install guide ontheir site just says "drag the BMP..." and I just do not get this!!

AFAIK, you need to convert it to a .pdb file so that it can be stored in RAM.

1. Copy the image onto your SD card
2. In ZLauncher, go to the SD tab and find the image file.
3. Tap and hold down the stylus until you get a popup menu.
4. Select "Back Image" - it should be converted and set automatically.

There are other ways to do it, as described in the manual, but I think this one is the easiest. Note that if you want to use a JPEG as a background, you need to install JpegLib on the Palm.

they can be .bmp or jpeg on the expansion card (save as 320x320 or whatever screen size you have @ 72dpi).

The files need to be on the sd card in /Palm/programs/Zlauncher/backimage

go to toolbar - theme manager - backimage

tap the jpeg/bmp file that you want to use...hit 'select'

hit ok

wait a few seconds while the jpeg is converted and read back into RAM (much quicker for bmp's IME.


in ZL 3.62B you may experience a mostly blank screen at this point. This bug is known to zztechs and they are on the case apparently. I must say, I have only had this problem with jpegs not bmps. If it happens , tap the screen anywhere there might be a 'hidden' icon, then exit out of whatever app you find yourself in...


as mentioned, if you want to use jpegs, you must install jpeglib first
