Hi all,

Just to get this new 7 forum back on track, I thought I would add an update re the exciting conversation about the possibilities of upgrading your 7 to full netbook status. Not heard about this? Well if you have been stuck in a hole for a week or so Expansys.com are currently (pre)-selling an upgrade chip for £65. This replaces the 7series rom card which can be found at the back of the keyboard under a small flap (the right hand one) which slides out. Go on have a look now.

If you can remember that far back (it feels like only two days ago....oh yeh it was 2 days ago !!) There was a couple of messages from people who had ordered them and were eagerly awaiting for expansys to get them in stock. Hopefully they will not have been too annoyed about their messages being deleted by those nasty people at PDAStreet.com and will let us know how they get on.

In the mean time, I emailed Expansys with a few qestions and this is what they had to say:

1) Who manufactures the Rom card. Is it Psion?

The card is manufactured by Psion.

2) I assume this replaces the current 7series Rom card (in the right hand compartment under the screen)?

Yes it does. The netBook Os would still need to be loaded.

3) I currently have a 16mb DIMM upgrade fitted to my 7. Will this need to be upgraded to the 32mb Netbook Dimm upgrade or will the 16mb car still work?

This I can't answer as we don't sell or have been able to test the 16mb DIMM. It is quite possible that it will work.
(A previous reply on the old board confirmed that the 16mb DIMM would probably not work and you would need to get hold of the 32mb Netbook DIMM if you still want to upgrade. Hopefully Expansys can still get hold of these.)!!

4) I assume that fitting this will void any outstanding warranty on the 7.

I don't see why as you don't need to open the machine to fit the upgrade.
(I am not sure this is entirely true as not all 7 motherboards would be compatible with this upgrade. If you still have warranty left, check with Psion before upgrading)

5) I understand that not all 7 series motherboards will support this upgrade, do you know how to distinguish between the different motherboard types?

This might apply to early releases of the Series 7 that used flash Rom (if memory recalls)
(Not exactly a full and complete answer so be aware that not all motherboards are compatible. If anyone comes up with a definitive answer I will post here)

So that is what Expansys had to say. Psion were not so helpful and did not know anything about the upgrade board let alone whether it would work. Call me cheap but this info came from customer services rather than the £1/min technical helpline.

I have also spoken to Palmtop magazine who are hoping to do a full feature on the upgrade in their next issue. This all depends on Expansys having cards in stock and will issue one for review by them.

Hope the above is of some use. If you need any other info or know anything else about it then post your questions/info here.

Regards

Si

Hi Si,
Good post. Thanks for the info.
I've recently bought a 2nd hand (or "pre-owned" in the new parlance) S7 which is excellent.

How will I benefit from an upgrade to a Netbook spec ?
Do you think it's a worthwhile jump for the ££ ?
Cheers.

My Series 7 was also bought second hand (from www.psionex.co.uk - recommended). I traded in a load of old series 3c/mx gear and got a great deal otherwise couldn't have justified it. I love the machine but wish it had more speed and ethernet support plus more memory capacity. Netbook is 190mhz vs 133mhz a 40% increase.

Provided your series 7 is a later machine the motherboard is the same as the Netbook and only the personality module determines the characteristics.

I am one of those who has taken the plunge and bought the ROM upgrade from Expansys. I order 6 August and checked with Expansys today who were still awaiting stocks but expected soon.
For 65 quid I think it's amazing.

I checked out some other nameless Psion forums and one guy who had a s7 and nB had switched the nb rom into the s7 and it worked although only one of his ethernet cards was supported.

I'm confident it will work on my s7, since it has the latest s7 ROM (756) which should indicate it's a later machine.

Of course I'm repeating my earlier, now lost, posts but this is probably the most interesting news in s7 land for a while.

Interestingly I pestered the editor of Palmtop about the change to Palmtop User, quizzed him about the ROM upgrade and suggested a few articles for us Psionphiles - one was the s7 to nB upgrade..... ;-)

Like I said before. I'll let you know what happens when the ROM upgrade *eventually* arrives.

Jezza.

Hi John,

There are a couple of reasons why upgrading will be a good idea.

1) The netbook is still fully supported by Psion Teklogix which means that upgrades to the operating system will be more readily available (and easy to install). The 7's os is stored on a ROM chip and although minor upgrades are possible, I doubt Psion are going to release any.

2) The netbook OS includes drivers for Ethernet cards which mean you can connect your Psion to a LAN. Please be wary though as there may be some hardware differences between the 7 & netbook. Check out Fladda's post on this thread:

http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=128

3) A new version of the operating system is due very soon. This was released initially (v158) a few months ago but was withdrawn again due to a few bugs. PsionTeklogix have now all but finished bug fixing/testing so shouldn't be long before it is available on their website again.

4) The new OS includes Opera 5.14 as it's standard web browser so when you click on the web icon to the right of the screen, Opera will be launched rather than Psion's own (very poor) web browser. Opera is currently the best browser available for ER5 and supports most secure login for bank websites.

5) Performance of cpu increase to 190mhz instead of the 133 that the 7 is restricted to by the rom card. (Please be warned that there is talk of the fact that even though the later 7's shared the same motherboard as the netbook, the CPU'S were all checked to ensure they could cope with the 190mhz running speed any that struggled automatically became 7's so there is no guarrantees that this upgrade will definitely work).

I am sure other people will have some other ideas on why you should or should not upgrade.

Before you do anything, open up the right hand panel under the screen (open 90 degrees and then tilt screen forward very slightly). Pull the cover forward to open and inside you will see the 7's rom board. On it should be a sticker. Hopefully it will say version 756 which is the latest card. This may indicate you have one of the later motherboards (I cannot give any guarantees on this but it is very likely).

If you have any doubt's then stay as you are. The 7 is still a great machine. As for myself, the warranty on my machine does not expire for a couple of months so I won't be upgrading until November at the earliest. Hopefully by then, more information will be available and perhaps a few success stories will have emerged as well.

Hope this is of use. Let me know if you need any other info.

Simon

Hi Simon
Thanks for the reply. Most informative !
I checked the level of my ROM board - 751 - so I guess it's too old to cope with an upgrade :(

Never mind ! As you say, the 7 is still a fine machine and is plenty quick & able to do what I want.

Hope your upgrade goes to plan. I'll keep watching the forum for updates.

Cheers
John

Hi John,

Does sound as if your board is one of the older ones. But you could always ask Psion or wait for more definitive info about the board which will surely follow. Come to think of it, I doubt Psion will be of much help as I am sure they would rather you bought a nice new Netbook.

In the meantime you can always upgrade your 7 with the latest patch available for it. First check what build you have on your machine. You can do this by clicking on the information drop down list on the main System screen. Select 'About Series 7...'. The main start up screen will be displayed and the build is confirmed on the third line down on the right hand side. If it says (751) or (754) then you can upgrade this to Build (756).

To do this go to Eirik Newth's great web site and download the patch. make sure you have backed up your Psion and then follow the readme instructions included in the patch download. If nothing else you will end up with a more reliable 7.

The link is as follows:

http://www.newth.net/psion7/problems.html#prob2

You will find the link to the UK & US Patches under the Frozen Touch Screen / System Crashes section.

If you need any other info, please let me know.
