Hello everyone,
I am very please to finally announce that FastBackup has been officially released. You can get it by visiting http://www.freepoc.org .
Compared with the last public beta-test from 6-7 weeks ago, there have been many improvements, both big & small. The biggest is that it is now installable using a standard SIS file.
Other improvements include stuff like proper CronTab (macro) support, properly draggable status window, properly coloured status window on non-colour Psions, better looking status window, non-buggy contents Protect command, integrated support for profiles (no more external "FastProfile" program!), improved help database, and a general tidying up.
Have fun with it, and do tell me what you think :-)

Thanks for sharing this creation with us Chris.
I installed fine on my netbook after I had let it install the source code as well. Otherwise an error of not properly installed seems to come up.
Congratulations on creating a really useful application and thank you for being so generous as to release it as you have done. So far all seems to do just as it should!
regards

well, Chris, CronTab problem is still here (since you haven't hacked CronTab, i assume:)) -- automated mode works only if Psion is turned on, it does not work when Psion is switched off -- because of the CronTab which does not start the programm.
am i missing something in CronTab or can you confirm the problem?
thanks.

I used to use CronTab with another backup program to have it run each night while touring. It would often not run. Too bad CronTab is a bit flakey. I've since switched to Ralph Sprenger's Backup and have had no problems with it. It has run every night I've been touring.

Very nice program! It is the only backup utility that I use :)
Thank you very much!

Hi
Re CronTab problem:
I had no problems using CronTab, when I tried it. I can only suggest that CronTab is Removed & then reinstalled using a newly downloaded version. You could also try re-reading the CronTab Help, incase you are using it wrongly.
Re Error when not installing the source code:
This is NOT really an error, FastBackup will run fine. Perhaps I will have to look at an alternative method for optional source code installation.
Thanks!

well, could you just describe step by step what how are you using CronTab-FastBackup bundle, since my results were confirmed on three different machines. thank you.

There's really nothing special I am doing. I hope that you are setting the job Type to "Macro", and not "App/Doc" or something else?
This sounds like a general CronTab problem, and therefore it might be better to start a new thread asking for help with CronTab? There may be some simple answer.
BTW, I only saw one other person with the problem, in addition to yourself, and that was not even in relation to using FastBackup.

Due to time constraints, I'm going to have to say that FTP support will never be added to FastBackup by me. Anyone hoping for this feature will need to use a different program, or modify the source code themselves. Sorry.
But I am happy to give advice, if it is needed.
In a more modern language than OPL, adding FTP support would have been easy. In OPL, it will simply be to much work (for something I'll never use) for me to write it.

P.S. I am assuming that the lack of posts here means that FastBackup is perfect! ;-)

:)
Isn't it much easier to come to that conclusion without even releasing it?
Unlike you, I'm quite sure my things are perfect, particularly unpublished ones

Heh heh. I have kept some of my program private for a LONG time (for example the Email_Indent macro), but have finally gotten round to releasing the most useful ones, especially now they work fairly well.

Since I've started writing OPL this year, I still got a LONG way to go... as long as its magic ("rite words in rote order") lasts ;)
