Been away, but they've let me out for good behaviour.

I'm looking for a simple (text based) messaging tool to chat between a WiFi XP laptop and my WiFi 7Book over an ad-hoc network (no internet access).

So, two machines, each with WiFi NIC's, want to chat. I was thinking of something I could address by using the static IP of the NIC's (or the DNS name).

Was thinking about something like IM+ but both machines would need to be connected to the inernet. Ideally I'm after something like the Windows 'NET SEND' command for both the Psion and XP machine.

Any suggestions?

I'm not aware of any existing software that could do what you require, but there are two ways this could be written I think.

1. Take advantage of an existing high-level protocol on one machine and write a client for the other.
2. Disregard any existing high-level protocol and write software for both machine that communicates raw TCP/IP on a given port.

A while ago I considered writing a 'Windows Networking' (SMB) stack for EPOC ER5, signed up for the documentation from MS, then gave up because I've dumped Windows for Linux :D

What about a JAVA IM client? Have you had a look to see if there is one available anywhere?
I had a quick look on google and there were plenty listed so have a look and see if you can find one that would work with the Psion JVM.

Looking for SMB protocol capability to either use with wifi or with the Psion wired lan card. Anybody aware of an option?

Thanks,
