This is an area that I am completely clueless about so perhaps someone can give me some advice ... What equipment would I need to wirelessly network my netBook to my desktop PC? I am assuming that I would need a wireless networking card for the netBook and some sort of add-on for my PC but as for what will work I have no idea. What sort of cost could I expect to incur?
Now, since this is a theoretical enquiry for now, what could I actually do with this setup? I assume that I could use my PC's internet connection (when and if I get broadband where I live ... will it also work over a dial-up connection) but cal I also do file exchanges, backups, etc.?
TIA

You can connect to the internet using a wireless lan setup but I would definitely spend your money on the broadband connection before the wireless link as using your exisitng dial up connection would be no quicker than any current dial up you have on your netbook (56k pcmcia card modem assumed) !!
As far as exchanging files and backups are concerned, unfortunately this will not be possible and you will have to continue using the snail serial connection or IRDA connection if you have one of these.
What would be nice is if the kind people at Psion/Symbian came up with an updated version of PsiWin which supprts LAN connections aswell as serial......but I doubt this will happen soon if at all !!

I have also seen some mentions of FTP being an option which might work for me.

AAAAAAAgh too much information !!!

This is definitely an option although I have not tried it myself so could not confirm how this would be set up. If I ever get around to playing with nFTP I will let you know how I get on.

FTP's a cinch. You simply need to set up an FTP server on one machine on your home LAN, set up an account within it, then put the IP address of this machine plus the account details into nFTP on the netBook. Job's done!

Thanks for the good news. I might play around with this over the serial connection using my Linux machine to run the FTP server.

Cheers Yan,
Great info and will enable me to play with confidence !! I was getting fed up of having to remove and insert the CF all the time, this will enable me to transfer files easily at full 100mb/s speeds !!

Especially back before I had broadband, I ran squid on a linux box and used WiFi on the netBook.
Since Opera supports proxies, it made a dialup connection appear MUCH faster than it actually was. If you run linux and have a functioning PPP client, then you definitely need to get squid running, whether or not you use the netBook to surf.
