You need full version of Outlook (ie. 2000, 2002), not Outlook Express running on the laptop. I believe you can find Outlook on the CD that was included with your ipaq.

If you have outlook 2000 or 2002 you can download Activesync 3.5 from microsoft for free from here:
ActiveSync (http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/downloads/activesync35.asp)
Or if you're using Outlook Express you can spend $16 and download SyncExpress from here:
SyncExpress (http://www.syncdata.it)

Hmmm, okay I'm going to explain some of this the best I can. If it sounds pretty basic it's because I'm new too :)
I'm assuming you have Outlook 2000 or 2002. To see the version you have, on your pc, start the program then look under the help menu and choose "About Outlook...."
When you installed Activesync 3.5 it gives you to the ability to sync the Pocket PC my documents directory. You should be able to see a shortcut to it on your desktop. Also you'll be able to sync everything in Outlook(calender, notes, contacts, tasks, etc etc.) If nothing is syncing at all bring up the activesync program window on your pc and click tools->options. It'll give you a list that you can check and modify.
So what exactly are you doing and what's happening? When you plug your ipaq in does it attempt to sync? Are you getting any errors?

Microsoft provides two e-mail progams for the PC, Outlook and out look express. Outlook is a free version that you can download. However activesync will only syncronise information with regular outlook. Normaly the iPAQ comes with a CD with software on it, one is Outlook 2002. You have to install this if you wantt to sync your inbox. Since you said you don't have a CD, you'll have to buy Outlook from a store.

Well here inlies the problem, Outlook 2000 does not support checking Hotmail or Yahoo! mail accounts. And even if got Outlook 2002, which does support Hotmail, it cannot be synced with just ActiveSync. I have seen software that will sync Hotmail and Yahoo! mail on this site. The link below is a good place to start. You should be able to setup a Outllok profile in 2000 without having to have an e-mail account so you can sync Tasks, Contacts, Notes, and Calander. If you have any other questions post back.

Do you have an outlook icon on your desktop that does not have the little shortcut arrow on it? If yes, right click this icon and click "properties".

In WinXP I know that they have made Control Panel categorized, have you scoured it for the "Mail" applet? Also if you open up a Windows Explorer window and traverse to the Desktop is there a Outlook icon?

Also have you tried doing a "repair" of the outlook/office install? Make sure to click the option to put the icons back, it's a check box on the final screen before it starts.

Hi there. :)
Sounds like you've had at LEAST your share of frustration with this thing. :)
A 3 year old IPAQ??? Sounds like quite the dinosaur, but I used an Aero for quite a while so even an older IPAQ should beat that.:)
It sounds to me like you have most of the bases covered already.
ActiveSync is of course required, but it needs a good copy of Outlook to sync up correctly.
To add a profile in Outlook, the easiest way will be to do it through 'Mail' in the control panel...the kicker here is that by default, XP hides most of the icons in the control panel under those very bothersome categories....usually the first thing I do after installing XP is to switch the control panel to 'Classic View'...there’s a button to do this on the top left of the control
Panel view....
Sounds to me like getting this done is only ONE of your issues...
As was mentioned before, Outlook 2000 doesn't support using hotmail or yahoo as your email...2002 does, but that's gonna cost you....
Even without a valid email account set up, you should be able to go into 'Mail' in the control panel and ADD Personal Folders...once you do this, there will be a valid place to store contacts, calendar, tasks, etc on your PC...and once that has been done, you should be able to choose them through the options of Active Sync to be synced...
As was also mentioned before, once ActiveSync has been set up and a partnership established, there should also be a new 'Pocket PC Documents' folder on your desktop...useful for moving spreadsheets, or other files for use on your pocket PC...

once you have the personal folders set up and have created the partnership...and it goes 'bleep, bleep' when you put it in the cradle, go into the options make sure you're set to sync all of the items you are wanting to sync....you can use a program called 'OneMail' to sync your hotmail or Yahoo with the handheld and you could even import emails into Outlook from Outlook Express and have them sync into your PDA.....
The short story is that there is a way to do just about anything you're trying to do, but there really isn't any way around learning, experimenting and finding what works best for you....the biggest trouble your facing, it would seem is a lack of training...which is nothing to be ashamed of, as there are dozens of things you'll need to know in order to make these things work for you....at least you can be thankful that it's not a Palm. :)
If you need specific assistance on any of the steps or some more philosophical ramblings, feel free to drop a line.

You might go looking for Outlook Express repair (http://www.oemailrecovery.com) and outlook express crash (http://www.mail-repair.com). I have been using it without problem since it came out.
