Does anyone know where to find a definitive list of the "AT+CBST=" settings for modem initialisation strings?
I thought www.gsm.org might have had some info but couldn't find anything :(

Found a website with the "AT+CBST=" settings if anyone else is interested.
www.gcrsoft.co.uk/data.html
The phone can be interrogated to find the settings supported by using the command AT+CBST=?

your issue seems to be really interesting but how can i actually perform my cell phone interrogation?

The AT+CBST= string is primarily for configuring HSCSD settings with a phone and network which support this technology.
how can i actually perform my cell phone interrogation? This depends on which Psion you have. With any model other than a Revo or Mako, open the Comms application and set the Communications settings to 'Infrared'.
Type AT and press [Enter]. The modem should respond with OK.
Type AT+CBST=? and press [Enter]. The modem should respond with the settings supported.
With a Revo or Mako, it is a bit more complicated:
(1) Create the file path C:\Logs\Etel\ so that when you dial up to the internet a log file is created in the 'Etel' folder. With a cellphone, the file will be GSMTSY.txt
(2) In the 'Data' string in Control Panel / Modems, enter AT+CBST=?.
(3) Connect to the internet and, after the session, look at the GSMTSY.txt file to see the response the modem gave to the AT+CBST=? command.

thank you Mike,
I'll try that on my nB and I hope it is going to work as well

Mike,
I can't believe my eyes!
after a few trials, I managed to get this answer from my siemens s40 mobile phone:
+CBST: (0,4,5,6,7,12,14,15,16,39,43,47,48,49,50,51,68,70, 71,75,79,80,81,82,83),(0),(0,1,2,3)
do you happen to know what it means?
does my phone (and mobile provider) support HSCSD technology?

I managed to get this answer from my siemens s40 mobile phone.....
.....do you happen to know what it means? The Siemens S40 does support HSCSD (and their website confirms this). However, you will have to contact your network to see if they also support HSCSD. In the UK for example, Orange is the only network which supports HSCSD.
Orange, O2 and Vodafone support GPRS and T-Mobile doesn't support either.

thank you Mike.
unfortunately Vodafone (omnitel) doesn't officially support HSCSD anymore, even if there is no certainty about that.
once it was supposed to be the only italian provider dealing with such technology. I tried to dig deeper into the sandbags their service representatives put around but there are no news in proposal.
BTW here are the settings I'll be trying tomorrow
init. reset string AT&F
(note: I do not actually know what it means)
data init. string: AT+CBST=80,0,0;+CHSN=0,2,0,12
(note: this is what I managed to understand from gcrsoft site)
fax empty
software
(no tick)
(no tick)
mobile
I would appreciate if you could explain what all this ticking and description is all about.

unfortunately Vodafone (omnitel) doesn't officially support HSCSD anymore Do you mean they don't provide "technical support" (help) for HSCSD or their system doesn't support the technololgy (it doesn't work)?
Try these settings:
--------------------
Init (reset) string - AT&F (resets modem to "factory defaults".
Data string - AT\Q1+CBST=16,0,1 (\Q1 sets "software" flow control on the Siemens phone, +CBST=16,0,1 sets a 28.8kbps connection. Don't use +CHSN on the Psion, it defaults to '0' and takes the speed from the "+CBST=" setting.
Fax string - (blank)
--------------------
Flow Control - Software (Xon/Xoff)
Terminal - [ ] unchecked
Carrier - [ ] unchecked
Modem type - Mobile
--------------------
The Flow control, Terminal detect and Carrier detect are serial "handshaking" settings - the way the two devices communicate over a serial connection.

the answer is actually both!
the official statements from Vodafone Omnitel deal with the fact they started some experimenting with HSCSD but they preferred to concentrate on GPRS as well as the other two italian mobile providers. in fact, no one actually knows that for sure.
I would like to try it anyway to see if it is really true or not.
I read your point about Orange being the only provider supporting it in the UK.
In the mean time, Vodafone D2 is currently marketing HSCSD technology in Germany.
I still have two questions for you:
1) which speed would you set the modem at?
(115200, 57600. 28800 or what)
2) may I be able to try these settings with orange when I'll get to London next month?

1) The speed you set in the Psion is the 'serial port' speed - this is the speed that the Psion and modem communicate, it is not the internet connection speed. Usually it should be at least twice the connection speed to allow for data compresion. Use 115200 if the connection is reliable, otherwise reduce it to 57600.
2) You would need to take out a contract with Orange in the UK to be able to use it - I don't think you could put a pay-as-you-go Orange SIM into your phone and use HSCSD. You probably couldn't even use 9600 GSM data calls that way.
