Heya,
I'm using a Palm m500 with a Sony Ericsson t68i cell phone. I'm on a U.K. phone network, 02, but this probably applies to anyone, anywhere.

I'm able to use the internet - such as it is on the mono screen :) - just fine, and I can e-mail, also. What I'm wondering is, are the e-mails I send from my Palm separate from e-mails on my phone? I believe they are, but I want to make sure - as my tarriff does not include e-mails sent from my phone. As I say, I'm 99% sure that they are separate, but I'd appreciate any insight from anyone else here.

Thanks in advance!

E-mails you send from the Palm through the phone are separate from e-mails sent directly from the phone, if you're using the phone to dial up your ISP, since they don't go through your phone provider's mail server.

I use T-Mobile (in U.S.) and would have to pay extra for their data service in order to send e-mail directly from my phone. Using my phone as a modem and dialing up my ISP, I'm just charged regular minutes and can send/receive e-mail and web-surf (as such) without extra charges.

Heya,
Thanks for that, appreciate the reply!
I'd guessed about that, but wanted to make sure; you also answered another question - it costs extra to e-mail from the phone. I guess this makes sense. E-mails from my phone aren't included in my tarriff, but then, it's actually just as handy to dial my ISP using my Palm and send them that way - plus, I can use a fully featured e-mail client like Multi-Mail SE, instead of the small (well, comparatively so) screen of the cell phone.

Thanks again!

Hey again,
Was just wondering, if by using the Palm SMS program, are the SMS also free from regular phone charges? I doubt so very much - the way I see it, an ISP can forward an e-mail on to the recipient easily, but any regular ISP wouldn't have the facilities to forward an SMS to the recipient - for that, it would need to be sent through the phone, therefore using up the SMS allowance...just a thought.

I think the SMS program that comes with the Palm Mobile Internet Kit just sends SMS to the phone to be sent the regular way, making text entry a little easier (if you're used to Graffiti) than double- or triple-tapping number buttons.

I've actually never used it. I use SMS so rarely anyway.

Andy (and anyone else),

I've just bought the Ericsson T68 (same as T68i w/o the pictures) and am sending e-mail from the Palm M500 via a Bluetooth card and then the phone. This works OK but seems very slow, even though I've got GPRS enabled on the phone.

My guess is that the e-mails are not going via GPRS because (a) it seems as slow as before the GPRS was enabled and (b) when I send/receive an e-mail there is no change to the data counter on the phone. This does show a change when I use WAP, so I think the GPRS is working.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Ian

Here's my guess, Ian...

I have T-Mobile phone service here in the U.S. Using the built-in microbrowser/GPRS in my phone would involve enabling the GPRS data service on my account, which I haven't done, and when using GPRS the phone would automatically connect to T-Mobile's equipment (server?).

When I send/receive e-mail currently (Palm m125 to Motorola p280 via infrared), my e-mail program is set to use my Earthlink dial-up phone number and username/password. I log in automatically, using stored settings in the m125, and my e-mail uploads/downloads (and web pages download) at 9.6K, much slower than GPRS would be.

It sounds like you're probably not using GPRS to send/receive e-mail from your m500. That would explain why you're not seeing a change in your data counter and your connection is slow.

I'm sure you're right Telyx but does anyone know how to get the GPRS to work??!
