Hello, I downloaded a trial version of Opera (version 5.14, opera for Symbian OS, release 5) but I haven't been able to connect to the internet with it. Each time I get the error message: "Network problem". I have no problem connecting to the internet via EpocWeb. So anyone knows what is wrong?

Check that the remote link (ctrl + L) is OFF. I also found this problem and 'the Dialer' program mentioned before will tell you this!!!

Sorry trying to rememeber what else I did when I had a similer problem. I may have deleted the 'epocweb'? Best what for the experts they are 'nocturnal' and most operate best in the evening hours. :p

Hi,

I assume you WEB/Java is still installed on your 5mx? Make sure this is before installing Opera as it must still be installed.

Try connecting with email or web and whilst connecting, then launch Opera. Does it work now?

Si

Si,

<<I assume you WEB/Java is still installed on your 5mx? Make sure this is before installing Opera as it must still be installed.>>

Are you sure of this? I uninstalled Web before installing Opera and have had no problems. I think Opera only uses its own resources and doesn't depend on anything from Web.

I have had occasional problems logging on directly from Opera. Your suggestion about first logging on using e-mail and then starting Opera always works so that's the usual way I do things now.

Regards, Jim

In some cases I have found it advantagous to uninstall a program and download and reinstall it again just in case something didn't get through right or corrupted.

Although it looks like you found a work around anyway.

Thanks,

Bobbyr

I dunno what's happening anymore! now I can't even connect to the internet with 'EpocWeb"! I've installed/uninstalled Opera, done soft reset, etc... and now I'm getting the following message: "Program closed - Program: MsvServer; Reason code: KERN-EXEC; reason:0". Help!!

I've only time for a quick comment atm, but this sounds as if it could be a memory-related issue to me. Check and see how much free space you have.

Opera needs a lot of space in which to run - best to close down all other apps if at all possible. I always have Opera and Java installed on CF rather than hogging space on internal.

hi Julie,
I do shut down all other apps, and have 8MB free space before running Opera ...
Anyway, I'm changing both ISP and mobilephone co. and getting a new CF next week, and we'll see how things do...
cheers.

Hi micpas,

If you can't even get in with the epoc web application then that is concerning. Try the following.

1) Enter the System folder on the c:drive and locate a folder called 'wtldata' this contains all your epocweb related data (for epoc web). Remove all these files.

2) Now proceed into the Apps folder and locate the Opera folder.

First enter the Cache4 folder and delete all the files contained in here (this will hopefully create you some space.....if there is any files in here !!). Secondly delete the following files (carefully !!)

global.dat (history data)
opcacrt5.dat
opera.ini (opera personal settings)
opera.win
oprand.dat
opssl5.dat
vlink4.dat

3) Launch email and check you can dial in as before and get your email

4) Launch epocweb and load a basic page such as www.psion.com. It should now work ok. Shut down epoc web but keep email open for the connection

5) Check what memory you have free on your c: drive. If you have more than 5mb then try launching Opera 5.14 and access a their home site. Hopefully all should now work ok

Let us know how you got on.

hi all. I still got problems connecting to the web and still have questions :-) I don't have Opera installed on my 5mx anymore. Now I'm just trying to make my email and EpocWeb work. The error message I'm getting now is: "Could not connect to internet. Problem communicating with Internet service modem. Call was unexpectedly dropped." There is communication between my psion and my mobile phone (nokia 6210) and the phone do call the number provided to me by my ISP. But after a few seconds there's a strange ringing noise, and the above message pops up. anyone has experienced this?

thx for any help.

Before trying your mobile again, can you connect using any other method (i.e. Psion's travel modem or Gold Card and PcCard Adapter). If so, then it would be best to get that working first and then move onto your mobile problems later. If your only means of connection is via your mobile, then read on.

Have you performed the mobile connectivity update on your machine yet. Linked to here:

http://www.psion.com/archive/epoc32/5mx_software/mcupdt11.zip

If you have then it may be to do with your modem settings. Please can you post all your modem settings, used for your mobile. Which mobile phone company are you with? What type of data connection are you attempting (Normal Data, HSDSC or GPRS)?

It does seem that your 5mx is talking to the mobile ok (assuming the above is ok) so the problem could be with your ISP. Who are they? I know when I started using my mobile to connect, my existing ISP's were unable to support slow dial-up speeds which left me with a none existing service. Luckily my current ISP's FreeUK & Tiscali are ok and support my snails 9600k connection speed. Check with your ISP that they don't have another number that offers better support for mobile phone connection speeds.

Let us know how you get on.

Si

Right I have had a quick scout around and found the following settings on Mike McConnell's great site:

http://home.clara.net/m-mcconnell/

He has posted the actual Nokia-Psion5 set up guide which has instructions specifically for the 6210 and even info on HSCSD.

Try the following:

Modem
Type Name - Nokia 6210 (or anything you want)
Speed - 57600
Connect Via - Infrared
Fax Class - Auto

Options
Never, Quiet & 4 are ok

Initialisation
Init String - AT&F&K3 (leave blank if you wish to use the "Receive fax immediately" function in the email program

Data Init String - I e AT+CBST=16 (for 28.8kbps modem connection for 9.6Kbps leave this field blank)

Advanced
Flow Control - RTS/CTS
Terminal Detect (DSR/DTR) - Does not give a setting so try it ticked first and then unticked.
Carrier Detect (DCD) definitely unticked

Try these and let us know how you get on.

If you need more info, check out Mike's site as he has the original Nokia PDF on it which confirms the above and more.

Hope you are able to get connected soon.

Kind Regards

Si

Yes, I see that message FAR too often and in my case it simply means that the ISP phone number is engaged. I doubt this is your problem, however, if you have never managed to get it connected at all, but it was maybe worth a mention.

This was one VERY good reason for me to change to GPRS! ;)

Thanks for answering so quick, Si. I first tried with McConnell's settings: psion still talks to phone, phone rings ISP number, call is dropped as usual, same message pops. I was quite sure that there were a problem with my ISP. So I called them. Talked to three persons and none of them ever had heard about Psion before ... what a shame! they said they had never tested this type of PDA. So I didn't get any help :-(

Hi Julie,
Yes, I do believe the problem is with my ISP and I'll certaintlly change to GRPS too if this problem lasts ... though I really do not want to replace my good old Nokia 6210 :-(.

regards to you both

hey hey. I'm on the net. How come? I got an email from a friend who has a Revo but using same ISP as me, here in Norway. He advised me to use "ATZ" for the Init (reset) string, and leave data init. string blank ... it did work. I don't know what the connection speed was though. After that I installed Opera again. It worked too :-) and that without having to launch email like many told me to do before opening Opera. Now, I'm going to try some ebanking via opera. I heard that Opera ask password before actually opening secured pages, is this right? Do I have to choose the password first? In Opera, I went to Menu>Preferences, there are lot of options there, anything I have to configure there before trying to connect to my bank's secured pages? If the answers are already somewhere in this forum, sorry for asking again.

michael

Great news !!!. Why is it, that these machines can still surprise us with weird settings?? Re your online banking, I can get onto all of mine in the same way as I would within IE (although quicker.....obviously:p ). If you have installed Opera and not fiddled with any of the settings, should be ready to go.

Let us know if you have any specific problems, although best to post them in the software forum.

Kind Regards
