I bought one of these on the cheap on ebay recently to replace my aging netBook.

Having some bizarro battery problems and I cannot stand the keyboard.

Other than that, it is pretty cool. Some of my initial observations, from the perspective of a 7/netBook junkie:
1. Keyboard is almost painful to use. 5/5MX keyboard was better.
2. Display is breathtaking -- indoors and out
3. It will NOT use the IR port to connect to an IR modem. This seems silly, as the 7/nB did this just fine. In fact (since I don't have a windows box nor a sim card), I went through some contortions just getting the software installed following a full reset. There is software for sale that will allow IR used as a modem. -- can't recall the name.
4. It will not send and receive files with my nB, but it will receive a vCard.
5. I am not sure if it will take my nB agenda file or contacts file.

Anybody else have an opinion on this marvel?

Has anybody made the switch from ER5 to the 9290?

Of course. The 5mx keyboard is the best PDA keyboard ever made.

>>>4. It will not send and receive files with my nB, but it will receive a vCard.<<<

You can install plBeam from PsiLoc in your netBook and they can exchange files over IrDA. plBeam also makes it possible to beam files from netBook to PC.

>>>5. I am not sure if it will take my nB agenda file or contacts file.<<<

Nope. Only via vCal/vCard. Due to Unicode file format in 9290 (ER6) and Ascii file format in netBook (ER5).

Yes I have, and back again :-)....

cheers
Martin

my brother-in-law has a communicator (9210i actually) and wanted to bypass the common GSM speed limitations by connecting via infrared to either a GPRS T68i or a IR 56k travel modem.
he actually never succeeded in doing so: is this the reason way he failed?

Yes, and this limitation was confirmed by Nokia technical support. This is probably to inspire users to burn airtime, and I cannot say that I blame them for this design decision.
