I miss Betty. I never really had a thing going with her, but last night I decided to look her up, but she refuses to talk to me.

Tapping the volume control (bottom of screen, 2nd from right) I ramped all the volume controls to maximum. I know, Barfing Betty doesn't need them all, but it was easier to cover all the bases. I then tapped the GPS icon. I selected the Preferences and tapped Guidance. I reset the Guidance to the defaults.

I went for a drive, and absolutely nothing. Not a squeak from the old girl. Same thing if I simulate a route. The speaker is fine, because I can record and play back using the Audio program.

I never really use the voice options anyway, and they did work when I first got my iQue, but I wonder if I have overlooked something that I need to configure or set? Many of you guys have had the problem with too much speaker noise. I have the opposite, too little.

What have I done to Barfing Betty? I want the old slapper to come back to me.:D

If you've done a hard reset, voice prompts disappear but the rest of navigation works (if you had loaded maps to memory card but not a spare set of prompts.

Are the voice prompts still in RAM? They need to be (AFAIK)

Hopefully, your problem will help us understand which app executes the prompts....

The file voice are those with 0001.vpm to 0119.vpm, so you do have the files on the install CD from Garmin which came with the Que, you only have to look for the folder and load the voice files to the Palmdesk.
First try to see in the backup folder on the Palm files or on the Add-on. Once you have got them, transfer to the Que and Betty is there again.

Or, you can use the installatin CD and choose the "change voice" option and re-install it.

I had to do this when I was cleaning up some files and deleted one that used the voice prompt.

I reloaded all the files you mentioned as they were missing. Unfortunately, there is still no sign of Betty. Is there anything else that needs to be loaded?

...does it matter where the files are loaded to? I let them go to the Palm memory, not my SD card. Using Filez, I can see all the files are in there. I also reloaded the GMAPBMAP.PDB file as that was missing and with all those files, no news from Betty...

Routing still works as expected.

Have you cheked the Volume Control? The guidance control gives you a 0 to 10, low or high volume, Betty telling you which one you prefer.

If you go to the installation CD and choose the change voice option, it will reload the voice and what other files are missing.

If this doesn't fix your problem, you have other issues - not missing files.

Guys, I would have replied sooner but my isp was full of nonsense again.

Anyway, I did the change voice reload, opting for the English UK version. That reloaded all the .vpm files again, and crucially, it loaded another file called vpm_phr_tbl.bin.pdb. Once the latter file had been hotsynced, Betty, or her UK equivalent, Slapper Sue, are now working.

Unfortunately, the accuracy of her directions is a bit vague! But we all know that, eh?

Simulating a route, it came to a circle (roundabout, rotary) and the turn preview showed the approach was to go straight over (enter at 6 leave at 12 o'clock). The voice prompt was something like "In 200 meters, turn left and then turn left)." Confusing? For sure. Anyway, I'll experiment with Slapper Sue. Fortunately, the turn preview clarifies her confusing instructions. Maybe it's this that qualifies for the free CitySelect upgrade CD next year. I've received confirmation from Garmin to that effect.

What are you using for external power in your car? I have lost the voice prompts in the past after a hard reset but recovered the function after hot-syning. I recently bought a Belkin auto power adapter that plugs into the universal port instead of the fragile power port. I just discovered that when this is plugged into the power voice prompts don't work. If I pull out the plug from the cig lighter socket but leave it plugged into the iQue the voice from the internal speaker works fine. I assume that the unit is trying to send voice out the universal connection as it would to the Garmin Autonav kit. Is there a simple fix to activate the internal speaker when power is coming into the universal connector?

I'm using the Garmin beanbag kit. Looks awful (imo) but otherwise works fine.

I had a problem like that, loosing Elizabeth (my UK voice). I hard reset, re-installed via card backup, and nothing. I went home, plugged my headphones in, and from then on it started working. I think there might have been something that happened right after i pulled the headphones out the previous time, that kept all sound going to headphone jack w/ nothing plugged in. Plugging and unplugging it worked perfectly, and after a day on the road w/o Elizabeth and a heart attack during hard reset, she survived.
